My dad introduced me to my extended family (Everton) 5 decades ago. Being an Evertonian is not unlike being in love with someone, that you just know doesn’t love you the same way. Or you just know that its not going to work, but you try, you persist anyway, because you love them.

I hate loving Everton. It just…. is.

I moved out of Liverpool 20 years ago, my boy has only ever lived in Asia, or now the midlands where all of his mates support the local team or the Sky 6. I have specifically never forced football and specifically Everton on him, for all the reasons in the poem, so his only experience of Everton was watching my misery and despair from a distance.

But moving back to the UK he got into footy and started supporting his mates team, but also started watching Everton with me because the footy was on.

Two years later he is a proper Blue.
I guess it just feels different.
