2023/24 Idrissa Gueye

How so? Did you think Garner & Onana were improved from playing next to him?

He's not been "unreal" at all aside from the last two games. Thats a bizarre shout.
Maybe 'unreal' is OTT but no doubt we need him in the team as he is a protector. Few loose passes go against him (what Everton player hasn't had loose passes this season) but we have a better Everton team with him playing so not that bizarre shout if you can actually see what he brings to the team

When he sticks to what he does best, I love him.

When he thinks he's some attacking mid at PSG, not so much.
Plays well, doing his job, suddenly the expectation is there to do more and forget the task he's specialised to.

The issue I have with Gana isnt what he does (like a dog after the ball) its the gaps he leaves. On the one hand hes a DM but on the other hand he isnt.

Whether you go with the old Horne/Parkinson type partnership and bring a 2nd Gana type (Ndidiesque or Ndidi himself if hes not totally finished) into the side so they can hunt as a pair OR you play him with a sitting player (like Onana should be) it works from a defensive perspective.

But then you need attacking play from elsewhere e.g wide or attacking midfield (Doucoure).

Hes out of contract and we should extend but not on the same £80k+ wages.

In fairness, when he did those forward runs at PSG he would have had five or six players moving forward with him, finding space and making themselves available for him to get shut asap. He never sees that with us, if he moves forward, he does so alone and when he looks up to release the ball most of his team mates would be hiding in terror that he might pass it to them. Or owrse, they receive the ball and just pass it straight back.

I see his shortcomings, but like you I love him when he plays the role of the destroyer. But I do feel that if we had a few more players who didn't have a psychological terror of all things spherical he wouldn’t have lost the ball half as many times.
