Idrissa Gueye

...both Gueye and Davis were caught the wrong side of Mane and Coutinho when they cut inside. You can see that for the goals both these players scored. In Schneiderlin's absence we badly needed Barry to start because he works that space ('between the lines').

Barry would've protected the wing backs, shielded the back four and given Gueye and Davies more licence. It was a very strange set up and even stranger that it wasn't changed in the first half.

neither of them are holding midfielders mate that's why, whilst both are good defensively it's more down to energy and harrying players not sitting in and being disciplined (Barry, Schneiderlin are those types)

Sorry he didn't play well at all for me. Missed too many tackles, 2 which led to goals. He seemed to take too long to pass the ball when he had it as well. He is a fantastic player but had a bad day like all of them.

Sure, but the claim he didn't make any tackles is false. He made five. It was still a bad day for him.

As to the failed tackles: You don't make all the tackles (tackles have a 50-60% success rate with the top tacklers), while Mane and Countinho still had to run pass two-three defenders before they scored, so putting it on Gana alone doesn't make sense. Especially Mane's goal, because the missed tackle was on the halfway line and he still skipped pass three more players before scoring. He alone was not the cause of either goal - it was a joint effort.

And his performance was still miles better than what Kante pulled off yesterday.

Did I say it was solely his fault for the goals? He played a significant part in both though. 5 tackles made in a game is nothing to shout out about especially in a Derby. Like I said he had a poor game but so did everyone else. Just struggled to see how some people saying he played well. No one did, there were no positives to take from the game.

As a team not compact enough meaning he was always 4 or 5 yards off where he needed to be. Morgan played yest would have been different

I didn't write he played well. I just wrote that it's false to claim he made no tackles.

And no - 5 tackles in a game is good. Most DM would be proud to make 5 tackles in any game. A lot of DMs can only dream of making the number of tackles Gueye did on a bad day. I mentioned Kante not by chance because yesterday he made 0 tackles and 0 interceptions.

One other positive from Gana's game was that he didn't misplace passes or loss the ball unnecessarily.

It's not all about making tackles though. If you are positionLly good you don't sometimes even need to tackle. I never saw Alan Hansen make a tackle, yet he was an effective defender. If he goes diving in all the time he leaves us wide open.im convinced Liverpool had a strategy of tempting him out of position and then to exploit the space behind, and he fell for it hook line and sinker

Dived in a bit too much yesterday.
Thinking back to some of coutinhos best games they have come against city & spurs. For me the reason is that zabaleta & walker are both rash players who try & win the ball.

Countinho loves this as he has quick feet stand him up and he Is lost he has the one trick drop the shoulder push it onto his right foot & blam he doesn't have to pace & power to dribble long distances.

Gueye walked straight into this yesterday Pennington also stood him up but showed him where he wanted to go & was too slow to do anything about it.
