Go to your local golf club and speak to the pro about some lessons. Might even offer you the chance to try several sets of different clubs and have a decent second hand set that will be better than new ones at a similar price. Also better to avoid bad habits from the start.
Yes, this.
Have a look at the golf courses in your area. See which one you like best. Once you have decided, go see the professional. Ask his advice on a second-hand set of clubs, it will be a good move to buy them from him/her. Book some lessons ending up with a 'course lesson'. This will be playing several holes with the Professional or his assistant and involve course etiquette as well as playing the game.
If you want to get involved on the social side of the club, go to the club as often as you can, meet as many members as you can, become a familiar face.

I didn't start playing until I was 40 (after finishing playing football) and played 'till I was 79. That's one of the main advantages, you can play to a ripe old age.

Just wanted some advice if possible. I played a few times at Bootle when I was a teenager but now I'm getting older I've got a taste to get back involved.

Would appreciate some people with experience giving some advice on what clubs I should choose, and how to go about learning in the best and most progressive way.

I've seen some Callaway edge clubs on Costco for around £450 but they are sold out unfortunately. Any pros and cons on taking up the sport welcome as well
Just give me a shout when you are off to the Course and I'll pop around and "Service your Boiler".
Then at least both of you will be happy.

My dad still plays three times a week, all year round and he’s 83. His only concession is a battery powered trolley.

I really don’t know what he’d do with himself if he didn’t play.

Many years ago I really fancied geting into Golf, I'm not the sportiest and thought it would be OK with my levels of fitness and just be a good social sport. Bought clubs, booked a series of 10 lessons with a local Golf pro at a local course.

On my 9th lesson the Golf Pro turned to me, and rather than try and sell me anymore lessons, simply asked "Have you considered any other sports". That was pretty much the end of my Golfing career.

I hope you fare much better than that :)

Don't do it to yourself.

Spend the money on some oak and build a coffee table for yourself instead. A better and less frustrating use of both money and time.

Hire a set first to see if you like the game .... any professional shop on a golf course will do that for you....
Its a great game - like snooker, all about hitting the ball in straight lines .....

I played both games in my younger years ..... ;)

Golf bought a 2nd hand set from the professional shop - they were fine ....

Snooker bought my first cue from a charity shop, hit a 42 break with it before then buying a top cue..... 46 was my highest break with it in a competitive league match though ......
