I've suffered from insomnia for a while now so can really sympathise. Worst thing about Insomnia is that its a self perpetuating problem, the more you don't sleep the more anxious you become about it... thus preventing you from sleeping. Is this a new problem or have you had it for a while? Does it only affect you on certain days, and does it happen more then once a week?

I have a lot of experience with this if its affecting your life and want some advice.

i very rarely feel tired at night so end up staying up late, bed at 2 up at 6 is not a rare occurrence although its cos the kids have woken up that i get up at 6, generally 5 to 6 hours does me but i would imagine insomnia is a 'mare. is it a body clock thing through studying/working cos shifts can really screw your system up. i found that they would screw me on the 2nd night of altering your system as opposed to the 1st.

So when its black, this insomniac, take an original tack,
Keep the beast in my nature under ceaseless attack,
I gets no sleep, I cant get no sleep

(hands naturally raised above head & cue the lasers)

Sleeping is a hobby of mine,i get at least 10 hours each night.Except for last night though because i had a [Poor language removed] scarey nightmare,it was so real that i jumped out of bed and threw punches at thin air,i was sweating like a kopite on Mastermind.

yea the self perpetuating thing sounds about right. the thing is its pretty new, i think its partly because my sleep schedule has been really messed up. I'm on break from uni right now, so i've been going to bed around 4 in the morning and waking up 2 in the afternoon. the last couple nights however, i haven't been able to fall asleep till around 6:30 or 7, but i haven't had any pressing engagements the next morning so its been okay.

i think the issue is i've just had a lot on my mind and hopefully it'll sort itself out, i appreciate the concern and help though.

main tips would be:

1) Try to recognise that your feeling anxious about not being able to sleep. Not just when your lying in bed, but earlier in the day... if you feel yourself thinking about it or worrying dont just push that thought away. Think yeah i'm feeling a bit stressed about it... then think about how although you've not slept other days your still fine and nothing bad has happened, and if you don't sleep later on you'll be tired the next day but thats all.
I know this sounds like psycho rubbish but thats what I was told by a pyscholgist and it works (my sleep got soo bad I had to go see a shrink lol)
2) Don't drink alcohol as this will mess up your sleep
3) Don't smoke
4) If you have a dog take it for a walk about half an hour before bed... just a quick walk round the block will clear your head and help you sleep.
5) If you can't sleep get up after about 30-45 mins. Go get a drink of water or something and don't do anything to stimulate your mind (i.e. watch tv, read footy forums etc). Go back to bed after about 15 mins... if you still dont fall asleep after about 30 mins get up and do it again. There's nothing makes sleep problems worse then just lying in bed for 4 or 5 hours waiting to fall asleep.
6) Never look at the time... the more you look at the time the more it plays on your mind.
7) Trying getting up and sleeping elsewhere. I used to get up and go sleep in the spare room (much to my girlfriends annoyance).
8) Have a wank... seriously it helps! Gives you a rush of endorphines which reduce tension and anxiety

My sleep problems stem from being burgled while in my tiny flat... scared the [Poor language removed] out of me and my sleep got gradually worse over 7 years. Has anything happened while you were asleep that could be causing any anxiety?
