main tips would be:
1) Try to recognise that your feeling anxious about not being able to sleep. Not just when your lying in bed, but earlier in the day... if you feel yourself thinking about it or worrying dont just push that thought away. Think yeah i'm feeling a bit stressed about it... then think about how although you've not slept other days your still fine and nothing bad has happened, and if you don't sleep later on you'll be tired the next day but thats all.
I know this sounds like psycho rubbish but thats what I was told by a pyscholgist and it works (my sleep got soo bad I had to go see a shrink lol)
2) Don't drink alcohol as this will mess up your sleep
3) Don't smoke
4) If you have a dog take it for a walk about half an hour before bed... just a quick walk round the block will clear your head and help you sleep.
5) If you can't sleep get up after about 30-45 mins. Go get a drink of water or something and don't do anything to stimulate your mind (i.e. watch tv, read footy forums etc). Go back to bed after about 15 mins... if you still dont fall asleep after about 30 mins get up and do it again. There's nothing makes sleep problems worse then just lying in bed for 4 or 5 hours waiting to fall asleep.
6) Never look at the time... the more you look at the time the more it plays on your mind.
7) Trying getting up and sleeping elsewhere. I used to get up and go sleep in the spare room (much to my girlfriends annoyance).
8) Have a wank... seriously it helps! Gives you a rush of endorphines which reduce tension and anxiety
My sleep problems stem from being burgled while in my tiny flat... scared the [Poor language removed] out of me and my sleep got gradually worse over 7 years. Has anything happened while you were asleep that could be causing any anxiety?[/quote]
Erm.......Yeah. I have. But it envolves midgets and donkeys!!
im not sure if ive got insomnia or wether its just that i like the night time.
i love the tranquility of being the only one awake in the house.
cant sleep tonight though , ive got to be out and about in 4 hours aswell.
i fell asleep for about an hour at 11 pm , had a mad vivid dream (get a lot of these), woke up , and have been wide awake since.
ive found theres only 3 things that help me sleep.....a spliff , a mug of warm milk (preferably ovaltine) or the film van helsing.
gospel truth - i have never watched van helsing all the way through.without fail i fall asleep before half way.
