I didn't learn to drive until comparatively late in life. Took just under a year with 1 lesson per week and only passed 3rd time of taking the test.

That might be because I'm crap at driving.

It's who you get as an examiner - they have a pass quota for the day IMO ... I passed 2nd time - I drove far better the first time .....
