Internet Speeds?

DSL shares bandwidth as well.

The intricacies of internet speeds is widely varied. I am not going to do a big long write up, but even me on a dedicated fiber connection shares bandwidth. I am only solo back to the area 'exchange' then it lumps in with all the other customers in the area back to the datacenter the ISP locates it gear in. Then it heads out onto the public internet through things known as peering agreements, but priorities are wildly variable. But ultimately, for things like watching your netflix/disney/youtube etc most CDN's have caches in most datacenters frequented by ISP's so that is why you will always get great performance to them.

Because it is only $10 a month more than a 200/50 connection.

Mbps is a perfectly valid tool to measure internet speed. For those who don't know, take your Mbps and divide it by 8 to get your MB/s (ie, 100 Mbps = 12.5 MB/s). Its a term right from the telco industry standard, which is founded in base 10, rather than our MB which are founded on base 2.

Aren’t u in NZ?

What criminal activity gets you those speeds!???

Fibre to the Dylans House direct.

I had no idea it was that bad as can have both tv's watching netflix whilst on phone and the kids watching YouTube etc on their tablets and it's fine so tbh don't exactly need it any faster.

@DualityNSNO twas a joke about dial up as our internet speeds in Australia are so much slower than the UK by the looks of it.
Well I'm not in the UK so... lol

My internet here is far and above better than what I got in Glasgow (also, at the time - speeds have exponentially grown since anyway/everywhere). We're an internet haven for price to speed.
Ah righto, I'm a bit of a dummy with this stuff so didn't even know it'd make a difference. I took today off work to do some landscaping in the yard (haven't even started yet as wasting time on here lol) and my laptop is in the office so will get the wife to see what speed her laptop gets when she gets home from work this afternoon.
Try cable as well as wifi usually varies.

As to 1) expertly explained like that imho. Intricacies are unnecessary for a day to day user anyway (not that GSG is one... ;) ), and maybe even for a regular "super user" tbh lol

For the price - same, but... still, why? Do you get any benefit other than than the e-stiffy (e-rection? lol ) from saying you have 1G? lol I run a lot of crap around home and have never even utilised it properly tbh, but I'm not gonna go lower realistically...

Honestly I know the math but still go for divide by 10 as a more realistic rule (100Mbps = 10MB/s), from what I've gotten in real life consistently. Recently (and only separate services tbh) have been able to reach my "on paper" download speed, even if I remove all other devices from the network.

Kinell
49 Mbps fibre... guaranteed to be at least 59Mbps download.
About 15Mbps upload.

Thanks plusnet.
I'm also on Plusnet and pretty much the same speeds as you. We're a house of 5 people using several devices at the same time streaming Netflix etc and we never get any buffering. I know 50Mbps is considered pretty slow internet these days but I honestly don't see what I'd gain by having any faster speed. Everything works. I don't see how it can work faster.

I think I'm on a 500mb DSL package through Hyperoptic these days. To be honest I haven't really been paying much attention ha.

To be honest its plenty fast enough for me too. It just irks me that its below guaranteed speed!

My son reckons 40 MB download speed is ample - the faster, the better though, but the main concern is if your ISP provider is perhaps the only one by all your houses just how fast is it at peak times?

When you purchase your package, they advertise the fastest speed ....not necessary when It's overloaded at peak times..... thats the time to carry out a speed check ...... plus always be aware if BT Outreach are working on a box near you, they can sometime inadvertently reduce your speed by accident fixing a problem for another customer.....
