He had a choice. Play for the club he loves or go to the best team in the land. He swapped the love and adulation he would have received for medals. It was his choice. But not just any club. Utd are a club whose fans detest scousers so in my eyes it’s the ultimate betrayal. The word legend wouldn’t come close to how highly respected he would have been if he’d stayed for his entire career.
He now seems to be able to have his cake and eat it as for some being associated to him seems to be a good thing.
I respect him for the player he was and his England career but I don’t want him anywhere near my club.

This alludes to a wider question of what qualifies for a legend. And there’s also no cheese on toast option available.

Rooney leaving the club to sign for Man U isn't him leaving Liverpool to sign for Man U (a transfer between the latter hasn't happened in 60 years), so there isn't a vitriol or "judas" angle aimed at him (Moyes left the club to become Man U manager and there was a celebratory send off to wish him on his way).

At the tail end of his career when long past his prime he was also welcomed back like the prodigal son.

Almost nobody at the club has any disdain for him going to United. The issue is he left the club when his career had barely started, and he gave all his prime years to another club. That's the reason he is not a club legend here (a mere suggestion of him being so I've never heard before until this thread). He has had a pretty soulless career in that the club he grew up supporting he ditched at the first available opportunity (after making a name for hismefl at the Euros), and then spent his best years at a club whose supporters hate scousers (even it is aimed at the red side).

He will never have that adoration that many former players of clubs get (in the case of here, Reidy, big Nev, big Dunc etc.), only respect (especially from United fans). Sol Campbell has a similar status. Could have been a legend at Spurs, made a career decision by going to Arse where he had a great success, yet doesn't have adoration anywhere.
