They are symbols to cover up inadequacies. "Look how tough I am" that is the mentality.

Agree, Rob. These dogs can be lovely creatures, yet these morons brutalize them and make them into the frightened and aggressive dogs that we read about in the newspapers.

my sister's pup is some kind of mutt, we think a pitbull mix. he's the nicest dog you'll ever meet though, his teeth could probably bite clear through your hand but the most he'll ever do is nibble a little bit.

it sickens me that dogs like him are forced to fight, and imo it takes an absolutely sick human being to be able to raise their hand in violence against a dog. this dog is also a big part of the reason i don't agree with breed restrictions, raised well this dog wouldn't hurt a fly, theres no reason to punish the dogs just because they're the choice victims of sick human beings.

If your (very pretty) sister is anything like you appear to be, then the dog will be treated with respect and compassion, and not made into an absurd extension of its owners desires. But I do think it is a duty of owners of dogs that do have the propensity to be aggressive to the point that real harm can be caused, to ensure that their dogs do not breed.

No dog should be illegal. Attack is not innate with them. They learn all they know. My Jack russell is a bit of loony. We let her off the lead on a field and she will run to the nearest dog, no matter how far away it is and try and get it to chase her. A few weeks back, she targeted a pair of Alsatians, bad idea. Had there been just one of them, she would have got away but the pair of them teamed up and cornered her and pinned her down. One had his mouth around her neck, the other around her waist. She struggled immensley to free herself, whilst firmly in the grip of the two dogs, monsterous in size. I managed to boot one of them off her and when I managed to grab hold of her there were puncture wounds all over her. She didnt walk for 4 days and couldnt move freely for 3 weeks.

Point is, if them two dogs had been trained up like the ones in that program, she would have been ripped into shreds within 10 seconds. Extremely lucky looking back on it.

So how can you determine an illegal breed of dog? Which breed is more dangerous than another? It doesnt matter how big or small a dog is, it doesnt have to be violent.

An idea could be to introduce a dog owning license or similar. A bit like a driving one, you have to pass a theory/practical test. Teaching a potential owner how to treat the animal. Make it compulsory to take the dog to a training school through the early stages of its life. If the owner fails, make the dog available to people who already have a license.

Jack Russell's are ace. I’ve got two myself.

I think Pitt Bulls are picked because of there oversized jaw muscles, they where originally bred for baiting Bulls, that’s why they have the big head and jaws. I'm no expert though, there could be other reasons.

In the 1920s they where the most popular family pets in America supposedly, just shows how things change.

quite right... rarely the dog's fault...

Attack is innate within the dog. A well cared for dog won't ever attack others, but given the right scenario, all dogs return to nature and act like the little wolves they are deep down.

They have lock jaw, so if they do attack someone/thing, theres no way of forcing them to let go.
