I've thought for ages that we have the CB's to play 3 - 5- 2. This could be a great formation at home

We have three pacey, mobile, capable defenders. To be fair, they'd probably get into any other PL team.... Maybe except Chelsea.

I see your point, but don't rule out the quality of Baines as a flying winger. He has it in his tool bag. Swap Manny as a longer term replacement for Carsley and slot Cahill into the Manny position and you may have something. Like you said though. Just a thought.

I agree. If we are to utilise Lescott at LB then I would put Baines at RB well before anyone else if push came to shove.

I know I'll get shouted down now, but whisper it quietly - I just dont think Cahill is that good! I see him as a Mark Hughes esque bustling second striker - in midfield he's a waste, he cant tackle, cant pass and struggles to beat a man. He is exceptionally effective in a 4-5-1 where he can break from deep but I think we'd be better off playing a striker in a 3-5-2 at home which would be very positive. Away from home we can easily revert to 4-5-1 and accomodate cahill.
Point taken on Baines, I think he's a very good LB / WB - I just think at some point we need to play a more positive style - we actually have footballers now - just imagine the pace of Yobo/Lescott/Jags mopping up anything cars let through. In front of cars we'd have the creation of arteta, the skills of fernandes and Ossie and the directness of Pinaar - Probably the Yak and Vaughn / Anichebe up front on current form - that would be a proper footballing side.
