Yeah, I remember it well. 2017.

Just had a look at that team to see how many are regulars in the national side, and it's pretty surprising reading:

England U20: Woodman (Newcastle), Clarke-Salter (Chelsea), Tomori (Chelsea), Walker-Peters (Tottenham), Kenny (Everton), Cook (Bournemouth), Calvert-Lewin (Everton), Onomah (Tottenham), Solanke (Chelsea), Lookman (Everton), Dowell (Everton).

Doesn't suggest the pathway is working for everyone. Fingers crossed Garner can buck that trend.
The U17 team that won the WC that same year has fared much better in that respect

Yeah, certainly a few from that squad have done well:

England U17: Anderson (Man City); Sessegnon (Fulham), Guehi (Chelsea), Latibeaudiere (Man City), Panzo (Chelsea); McEachran (Chelsea), Oakley-Booth (Tottenham); Foden (Man City), Gibbs White (Wolves), Hudson-Odoi (Chelsea); Brewster (Liverpool)

I reckon the discrepancy is probably because the very, very best players that could qualify for U20 are likely already in the senior squad, whereas it'd take something extraordinary for an U17-eligible player to be in the senior squad.

Yeah definitely. Especially back in 2017 when the senior team was worse than now

Given that dyche likes and will play McNeil, iwobi gueye and doucoure the only way for him to get garner into the team is right midfield?? Think he does tick a lot of boxes tbh so wouldn't hate to see it

You could fit Garner into midfield in a couple of formations with the other players mentioned. For example in a 4/2/3/1 with a midfield duo of Garner and Gueye, with Iwobi, Docoure and McNeil filling the 3 positions in front.
Garner. Gueye

McNeil. Docoure. Iwobi
Something along those lines, Iwobi and McNeil could switch sides.
Or in a midfield 4
Gueye
Docoure Garner. Iwobi
With McNeil playing off the main striker.
Would be interesting to see Garner in a more creative / offensive role, see how capable he is in such a position.

Bit like Paterson, one of the few players with anything about them who we can be excited about. Like Paterson needs to stay fit for as much as possible and get a good run in the team. Not sure how he gets in if Dyche keeps going with a midfield 3 and he’s got Obama, Gueye and Doucoure to get ahead of. Maybe we sell Onana and that’s how he gets his place?

Has to be Onana and Garner together. Perfect balance on paper.

He looks like a very good, technical player with lots of good attributes. I’d like to see how he does given more of a license to be offensive. What’s his finishing like? How effective is he at timing runs into the box, making runs past the forwards? How good is his long range shooting? I think given the opportunity he could well prove to be excellent at developing these types of skills. And he’s at the right age to try and add these elements to his overall game.

On paper think you could be right, Doucoure ahead of them and there’s good physicality and a goal threat. Yeah, it’s a premier league midfield - unlike some of the other areas of the team. I just don’t know if Dyche will drop Gana, if fit. Have a horrible feeling it either Onana or Garner if Gana and Doucs are fit…

Then quite simply Dyche doesnt know how to setup a midfield, it would be that simple.

You cant play a one dimensional Gana over either of them.

The Gueye that was consistently very good last season and whose tackling and interceptions just about kept us in games to get the points we required to survive?
Gueye is very effective when asked to play a role that suits him.
FL used him as the fulcrum of our midfield play and he just can't do that.

Gueye can help protect the back four, win back possession and then give the ball to someone who can play and he should never, ever, ever be allowed to shoot on goal.

Better further up the pitch. Cost us few goals last season when giving the ball away in that 6 role. Love to see Garner giving a run of games in that sitting role with Gueye ahead of him
