2024/25 James Garner

Has ability but just meh.

Will give him the benefit of the doubt tonight in that when Gana got a toe in and Garner ended up with the ball deep, facing forward, he had the choice of lumping it to Beto, Harrison on one side (who the whole team looked scared to have a go at when he failed to play the obvious pass - they know he has fully gone), and a central player on the left, who was never ever going to make an incisive run behind.

Few times he got his head up, ready to do the thing you’d assume he was good at, and the options were turd.

Disappointing season for me. Experienced PL player now, but looks for all the world like a player a newly promoted club would sign.

Doesn't look like someone who could throw the ball like that. Quite impressive. With a bit of fine tuning and more confidence (i.e. sending Tarkowski/Branthwaite up like it was corner), could be dangerous. Brentford and Forest do this quite effectively.

Otherwise, don't remember him doing anything with the ball.

Sort of player that would be better in a better team (e.g. Doucs is the opposite of this). He can spot a pass and can keep the ball moving at a decent tempo but his options with Doucoure et al are limited.
Not a game changer or dictator and we need better. I’d keep him at the club but he either needs to step up or step down to the bench

Very very meh, like so many of this squad.

It won't be long before he is dropping donw the leagues fo me.

Not fast enough, strong enough, not enough quality on the ball, doesnt shoot much, not that good at set pieces, just very meh.

His best games have been at right back, you dont need as many top qualities to fill in an full back and do well.

Can see him being used as a Phil Neville type, Dyche brought Young in as his utility man (another former man utd) and reckon Garner is used similar, covering for injuries, form, and players on a card. Rotated through the middle and the right side to cover where needed. Important role, dependable, and means we aren't scrabbling round. Can see a utility left footer signed to cover similar left side. It's about doing more with less. We have to get value cover so we can buy a couple of specialist positions.

He's not shown anything that got me excited when we signed him after his brilliant season for Forest in the championship.

He looked to have a lot more passing range and a long shot and decent set piece delivery but we've seen none of it.

I think he puts a lot of very good work in then tires quickly. Needs to be hooked for Tim sooner, but his work rate and distribution when he’s on it is decent.

A good squad player long term.

He looked class at Forest and as Ive always said is a good all rounder.

The hope is that Armstrong can offer competition in his position and he and Armstrong become better players for it.

I think he adds a lot of value in terms of being a player to come on off the bench.

Definitely a player who should have his contract extended this summer as he only has a year left -- think we have a years option as well.

He looked good at Forest because it was a lower league. He's very average as a Premier League footballer. Fine to have on the bench I suppose as he can do an ok job in a number of positions.
