[QUWarsawggs, post: 3121814, member: 16669"]..agree, we were chasing the game somewhat and he was trying to make something happen. He might score a key goal one day.[/QUOTE]
In warsaw in may 2015!:)

Big, big hole in his game that. I've seen him take that on in the RoI team a few times, but the PL holds some fear for him. I cant believe his manager doesn't want him to try it.
?? you better believe it because as has been constantly pointed out, it's not what he's in the team to do to do. The only reasons he was getting forward today was because Swansea didn't have the ball in the midfield areas that he's designated to cover and we were desperate to make a breakthrough.
When he plays for ROI it is what he's asked to do because they have less talented players in their midfield that will sit in and patrol those areas for him.

Yeah, I accept that. But Martinez has said time and again he's expecting McCarthy to step up in respect to this side of his game. He must be encouraged to.

yes, but I expect he's got a list of conditions to when he's allowed to do it. Coleman's location being the obvious one, Centre backs position, Barry's position. If any of those four are ahead of him on the pitch them I doubt he'd go anywhere. If we play someone who counters or presses high I doubt he'd be cut free either. I'm guessing there's a strict criteria to when he can get forward without a verbal go code from Bobby brown shoes.

That said, I did notice today that even before the Birdman got winged, Barry was the one sitting further back, almost into a back three at times not McCarthy. I'm wondering if that isn't a new strategy to reduce Barry's workload a tad, to nurse him through games a bit more so he doesn't have to exert himself as much so he can perhaps play a couple more game than he would have? Last year it was always James that sat back and covered properly whilst Barry joined up with play further up the pitch. This year, especially the last few games I've noticed that it's Barry who'll sit whilst McCarthy pushes ahead toward play.

I think Besic's development will alleviate McCarthy to get forward more than Barry playing further back in the holding/middle 'cb' role.

On your first point though: yes, he does have a lot to think about and weigh up before he can make the decision to get on the ball and stride foreword, definitely. But he's been here over 12 months and I can barely think of more than a handful of times he's stepped up with real intent. He must have had a lot more opportunities than that to carry the ball. It's seems strange to use the word timid with regard to McCarthy - but he is in terms of having the confidence to turn away from a sideways pass and be more direct with a forward run. At Wigan he did it more than he has here (and he does it with RoI), so there's no question he has it in his locker.

Great again today. Carries our midfield at times and Barry would look far more exposed on many more occasions if it weren't for McCarthy.

I think if Besic becomes a regular first team starter, we'll see if McCarthy can step up with other elements of his game as Besic has the legs to share the role James currently does for the team.
