James McCarthy

He had a bad season, but was nowhere near our worst player. He had a season pretty similar to his many at Wigan to be fair, so I can understand why people are concerned (I was concerned when we signed him for that very reason!) - but he showed so much in his first season that I'm not overly concerned, as he has that in his locker and I'm confident that he'll improve and be much better next season.

I think Everton will be the biggest club that McCarthy ever plays for. He is good off the ball, but I don't think he is good enough for the bracket above Everton. Which is no insult.

To play at the top he'd have to be a lot, lot better going forward and with his passing game.

As you say, no insult to him, as he's very good at what he does and is a key part of the spine of our side. Well worth the money we paid, against the odds.

I'd like to see him settle into his new box to box role a little longer before I would agree with that (if he's allowed).
He did it at Hamilton when he was 16-18 (playing almost as a no10 at times) but at Wigan Bobby anchored him as DM. Now he seems to be allowing him the freedom to get forward again. Will take him some time to get used to the new positioning/role especially at this level

Can't agree here - blue tinted glasses I feel. He's only 24, so will only improve. The key aspects of his game that he needs to improve is his goalscoring (though that'd come if he got into goalscoring positions) and maybe his passing in key areas. Other than that, he's already got the lot and at this moment in tome would walk into any midfield in the league (except perhaps Chelsea's - depending if Fabregas was playing deep.)

He's better than Fernando or Fernandinho at City.

Better than United's central midfielders and would slot straight in at Arsenal.

Ultimately the problem comes back to Roberto. If he would drop Gareth Barry we could have McCarthy being a very good defensive mid with Barkley next to him driving box to box. Cover for both in Besic and Gibson and then we'd only be talking about what number 10 we needed, not debating why two of the country's supposed top young midfielders are playing in a midfield which doesn't score goals, struggles to keep possession and doesn't protect its defence.

Honestly watching Barkley being shoehorned in all over the attacking line, McCarthy trying to play creative mid, and Gibson playing number 10 is painful.

There's very good midfield players at Everton but there's not a good midfield and I doubt Martinez's ability to find one. Next season will be Cleverley Gibson Barkley ahead of Barry and McCarthy. Sounds ridiculous, but you all know he'd do it.

Agree, good player for our level but think our fans massively overate his overall ability. Not good enough on the ball to top class and he doesn't really show any signs of improving that aspect of his game.

James McCarthy seeking urgent Everton contract talks after Tom Cleverley signing

http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/james-mccarthy-seeking-urgent-everton-5831569

James McCarthy is seeking urgent contract talks with Everton following Tom Cleverley's Bosman signing.
McCarthy is unhappy because Cleverley will be paid more than him when he joins on July 1 on a free transfer from Manchester United.
The Republic of Ireland midfielder was already annoyed because Everton have yet to fulfil their promise to offer him new terms.
Boss Roberto Martinez had said talks over a new deal would take place at the end of the season and McCarthy will now push for those discussions to begin as soon as possible.
McCarthy is happy at Everton, but wants his value to the team reflected in his wages

His agent is skint, needs the money from Jimmy Mac signing a new deal.
I do think he'll sign one soon like, lad has no intention to leave.
