Louis Van Gaal is ready to turn his attentions to Seamus Coleman as his search for a right-back was hit by another setback last week. The Manchester United boss has seen two potential targets slip away as his squad rebuilding crawls along this summer. Dani Alves has agreed a new two-year deal to remain at Barcelona, while Southampton’s Nathaniel Clyne is putting the finishing touches on a £12.5million move to Liverpool.

That leaves Coleman as the next name on the Dutchman’s hit-list – and the Everton player’s camp are bracing themselves for a call from Old Trafford. The Republic of Ireland ace was one of the undoubted bright sparks during an otherwise disappointing campaign at Goodison Park. And he has been monitored by Bayern Munich for some time, but it is understood that manager Pep Guardiola is not so keen on the 26-year-old. Van Gaal is looking at a bill of £15m to land the right-back and it remains to be seen whether Coleman would try to force an exit from Merseyside. United came calling for Leighton Baines when David Moyes was in charge, until the England defender pledged his loyalty to the Toffees.

However, Coleman’s stance may be different in the face of a concerted effort by Van Gaal to lure him away.

Someday someone will write a book and do an investigative piece on why tabloid newspapers repeatedly write the same stories about the same people getting sold ad nauseum. Pretty hard to argue that there isn't an anti-Everton agenda, given that most of the Everton team are apparently for sale all the time. Yet 99% of the time none of them ever get sold.
