Tonight, I don't think McCarthy had a licence to go forward , I think his job was to sit in front of the defence and try to cut out any danger and he did this excellently.
I think he barely went past the half way line, he closed off the middle of the park, played the ball off simply and was very effective.

I agree but I'm talking about just making himself available for a simple pass in his own half. Not driving forward. There was a few times this evening when it was sent long with Mccarthy 5 yards away in space. He doesn't have to knit it all together but just be available to switch the play.

he was a key part of the side that finished 5th.

how can he 'not be good enough'.

He played very well tonight, in a game where he was given a specific role. As I've said all along, he's a player who needs that. Whether taht role is as a holding mid (like tonight) or if it's in more of a shuttling role (like vs Norwich end of season, or a lot of the games in his first season at EFC)

But that wasn't his job Joey!

Hoolahan is a no.10, McCarthy was playing Defensive mid to make sure italy couldn't get forward - and he did that very well! When Ireland needed to press for the goal, they took off their DM (McCarthy) to make way for an attacking mid (Hoolahan)
 
Funny how when played as a DM he looks quality.

Hes a great player...if we bring in top quality and hes pushed onto the bench it shows we have a great midfield.

Exactly. Italy would have carved open Ireland all night if McCarthy hadn't been there to do that specific job of stopping them. All of his best games for Ireland have come when he's played in that position.

O'Neill ran the risk in the last 15 minutes because they needed a goal. Hoolahan is much more likely to create something than McCarthy - simply down to the type of player that he is
 

The end of day, if the rumours are right regarding Schneirderlin. And we seen how Martinez played McCarthy every game when fit. RK will play schneirderlin in front of the back 4 every week.

And he will want much better in the number 8 role than what McCarthy can offer, wouldn't be surprised if he's sold this summer
 
If we could sell him without making a loss it would be good business. The only Irish player good enough for EFC at the moment is Coleman. Although Jeff Hendrick has been ROI's best player this tornament IMO.

There is a reason why Jeff Kendrick is playing championship football all his career so far, he isn't good enough for the premiership. He reminds me a bit of McLean, does well in a very moderate Irish team but will be shown up when he goes back to club football.

McCarthy on the other hand, who is more or less the same age as Kendrick has played nearly all his football in the premiership and if Everton decided to sell(which they won't) they would have no problem finding buyers.

Judging players based on tournaments such as this is not a good idea.
