James McCarthy

rest / injury has done him good in the long run, looks good again.

Would like to see him next to besic eventually.

Him and Besic are the way forward. Without at least one of them we look a different side.

in the summer we need to add one more CM into the squad so we never have to worry about them both beinf shoehorned into CM.

Agree with this. It's the crafty, almost dirty, dark art of winning free kicks, getting in the referees ear and general snide that all teams need to do if they want to be successful. McCarthy is good at it but Pienaar is Jedi level

Don't particularly even think it's all about getting in the ref's ear. Just been able to position yourself so that you will definitely win the free-kick. McCarthy did it three or four times last night and it relieved pressure.

We do look far more solid with him in the team. There's far too many times when there's a decent pass forward on and he hesitates, turns and plays it back or sideways though.

No coincidence we kept a clean sheet with him back. Dirty work around the field we been missing. Some that can't see that need to watch the games we threw away in the last 7 weeks.

Give a good display broke up a lot of play, I really like McCarthy don't get me wrong but he ain't no Garth Barry importance wise to this team. Perhaps Besic can fill the Barry role but McCarthy certainly won't.

McCarthy is extremely important to this team mate. Equal footing with Barry when they're both fully fit.

Completely different player to Barry, and won't fill that role. Like you said, that will be Besic eventually.

Okay, I am going to call it.

McCarthy was crap last year and so was the team. He was average or injured this season and we have been average also.

He was looking like his old self against Bournemouth and we were up in the game and looking okay. He gets injured and it goes to pot. He has gotten back to how he looked in his first season in the last two games and we have won both 3-0.

So there you have it, undeniable proof that McCarthy is the Messiah and everthing is going to be rosy from hereon in. Rejoice!

....until he does his hammy again...

McCarthy is great breaking up the play and when he's hunting players down and getting stuck in he's great but on the ball I would like to see more from him. When we have the ball McCarthy and Barry and virtually the same player for me. If we can gets a few wins on the board keep clean sheets ramp up the confidence hopefully we will see a more complete midfielder running forward playing progressive passes (round the corner, one twos etc)

In all seriousness I think the lesson is that we rely heavily on a McCarthy/Besic type to run around getting stuck in. We don't defend well as a team and it puts a lot of pressure on whoever is in that role. Our defensive implosion timed perfectly with McCarthy's injury (we were winning at Bournemouth, he got injured, it finished 3-3... then the long run of throwing wins away ensued). Up until Besic came into the team and we settled a bit with some good away performances.

We need to defend better as a team. We don't press and I think it's clearly a tactical decision not to. It puts a big burden on whoever is next to Barry (who breaks up play well himself) and when that duty falls to someone other than Besic/McCarthy, we're exposed badly.
