Confirmed Signing James Rodriguez

I know he was quality in that World Cup and he's done good things at various clubs over the years, but I can't help but think an expensive player who hasn't hit the same heights for a number of years and on a downward spiral in his career is not really what we are looking for.

The people saying if he's half as good as he was in 2014, he'd waltz in to this team are possibly the same ones saying 'pay Sandro what he wants' before he came in.

Everton need to build a younger side that can progress year on year, not fill it with expensive signings that are here just for the money. We've tried that since Moshiri came in and look where it's ended up.

And for those saying it's Carlo's choice, it's been well documented that Rodriguez is Moshiri's favourite player and we have been linked with him ever since he bought the club, so despite Carlo having managed him previous, I'd say it's a Moshiri signing rather than a Carlo one.

It's just a lack of nuance.

If you want to say he's not the player he was in 2014 then fine, I'd agree with that. But a guy at 50% of where he was in 2014 would waltz into this team. Hes not declining from the same point as Walcott and Sigurdsson.
As long as he agrees to take 50% of the wages he s getting now, and that would be too much, but less of a huge gamble.

I'm on both sides of the fence with this.

IF he can rekindle the form he was producing his 1st year on loan at Bayern, he would be by a long long distance our best player. But his injury record is shocking and he's not really played much football since that time.

The problem is Everton need both at the moment. We need to instantly improve our starting 11 so signings like this are needed but we also need to build for the future so we also need to sign players that we can develop and then potentially sell on.

Don't envy Brands. He's damned if he does either or.

If we do decide to go for him (& he with us) then it is doubly important to get Allan and another decent midfielder (Doucoure or similar) at the same time. We cannot get in a quality player and then bomb as per usual to the point said player decides to put their feet up and ride the gravy train.

If you sign these types you have to fight for trophies else they will turn into lazy luxury items before you know it.
