@UptheTofees is right about Colombia's media sensationalism. Unfortunately James has usually been the victim of rumors in Colombia and Madrid that tend to be false.

He is, by design, the least responsible person for any goals we give up in almost all cases.

That's fine in theory, but it depends what the team is set up to do. If he's supposed to be tucking in and helping out defensively then clearly it is a massive problem if he's not doing it. Defending isn't just the back 4, if the team has a plan and he doesn't play his part then the plan won't work, so that would need to be addressed. If he's given licence to skip his defensive role then i'm fine with that, but we need to wise up tactically. We can't push the full back on and have Allan and Doucoure haring round the midfield if James isn't going to do anything defensively. You can see just by watching the games that it's been a problem, I just don't know if it's James or Ancelotti that's causing it.

Allan haring around in midfield when he is the number 6 is a much bigger problem than anything James is doing.

When Richarlison was fit what we were doing was essentially leaving James free. He would occasionally go up and press or track back but ultimately he had no great responsibility. We would defend 4-4-2 when James didn't get in and have Doucoure slide into that right sided position. It hasn't worked because no one is Richarlison and we don't have that same level of security on the left now. Also contributing is Allan constantly stepping out and leaving an unfilled gap and the other CM whether it be Gomes or Sigurdsson being a wide open door to the goal. So while maybe we could be asking James to do more it really could also just be fixed by having everyone else do their job.

For me James job is to make goals happen. Get on him for that. But there are 8 guys in this team currently who have way more responsibility for stopping the goals are at our end and until they're all doing their jobs at an acceptable level I'm going to leave the criticism there.
