I think Ancelotti was hoping to batter these give James the ball and let him get some assists and hopefully be 2-3 nil up and then drag him off, Obviously never played out like that.

well the game plan ended up being sit back at 1-0 from the looks of it. A very bad game plan.

Its good when he moves to the right temporarily. But keeping him on the right just exposes Coleman. We actually lost consecutive games with him on the right because epl teams know James has the same defensive ability as Davies.
Not sure I agree, he and Coleman played together on the right during our best run of form and performances in years at the start of the season. It certainly gives Coleman more of a job to do defensively, but defending isn't an issue for him, getting forward is.

Have to say, I might have made a different decision to Carlo today, not sure I would have started him or Digne in the predictable grock fest of the 3rd round with lower league players trying to have a cut of you.

But then I don’t have 3 CLs under my belt.
Think that’s a bit of a disservice to a team that played us off the pitch for an hour.

Being honest... genuinely didn't think he looked especially up for it on Saturday at all early doors, just doesn't seem to fancy a physical game.

That said, you just can't deny his quality. Gomes was overplaying balls left, right & centre yet James needed only one opportunity to thread that beautiful pass straight to Doucoure for the winner.

Desperately needs to get his fitness and motivation back. Hopefully playing into ET on Saturday will have helped getting the footy back in the legs at least.

I concur with your assessment of his fitness but he can only achieve full physicality by playing regularly.

I disagree with your statement about his motivation though. What makes you think he is not 100% motivated?

I think that we need to remember that James played very little at the start of last season, there was the covid break, then didn't play at all upon the return. He then came into this season with literally no pre season due to the late start to the season.

Conditioning was always gonna be a problem. But I am hoping he is good to go for the 2nd half of the season.
