So you honestly wouldn't trade the effort we had under Moyes compared to what we've had to endure for the past number of seasons under Martinez/Koeman/Silva/Ancelotti?
All we have seen lately is the same suspects dodge 50/50's, stroll around, not pressing, not tackling, pointing and hiding at team mates whilst pretending to look busy we need a change in direction.
Players like James who's extremely talented is great but there is a reason why he is at a midtable club and not a Champions League one and thats his injuries/attitude/work ethic.
The likes of him, Gomes, Benard, Siggurdsson all the same type of player - tippy tappy, nice on the ball but nowhere to be seen when the opposition fancy a battle on the day.
Richarlison is a good player but he has fight/work ethic
Godfrey is a good player but he has fight/work ethic
We need to start bringing in more players like them as thats how we start climbing the table and punching above our weight - not building a team around a fella who's never fit and wont be here in 12 months time.
But your attitude is typical of a lot of Evertonians. Small-time go nowhere football, played by small-time go nowhere players, such as you are advocating won't get us anywhere.
Just because we've bought badly and tried different things doesn't mean we need to go back to the Moyes days and style. That's a mad way or thinking about it. Similarly the fear a lot of fans give over having a manager that wants to play passing football just because we had Martinez- who wasn't very good at it, as the best passing teams still press and are aggressive a la Guaridola's team - is weird.
People talk of a desire for trophies and competing at the top end of the table but always advocate the kinds of things that will NEVER get us there. We need to sign young, pacy hungry players, get in a young, innovative manager who plays progressive football.
But the club mirrors the fanbase - always looking for PL experience, afraid to take risks, would rather give game time to or sign an experienced player knowing they are poor than risk something on young unknowns who may exceed expectation, would rather see a lad run around a bit and put a tackle in than see any real quality. When in fact we should demand BOTH. Either or is never really going to get us anywhere long-term but people believe that one is much better than the other.
But if it is going to be either or (particularly in the instance of our main playmaker) then we should marginally favour quality. And what I hear used a lot is that 'so and so is a talented footballer but doesn't put the effort in', but I think that is fundamentally untrue. Bernard is not a very good footballer, Iwobi isn't, Gomes isn't and so on. The only one that adage could maybe apply to is Sigurdsson- but we apply that to all players that aren't good enough that don't look like British grocks (e.g. Michael Keane).
James produces. His numbers show that he produces. If he ran round a bit more and had the exact same numbers our fans would be creaming themselves. You then need to ask yourself; if he isn't running around like a headless chicken but is getting those numbers, does he need to do it? Saha was the master of the pointless jog that wasn't really a concerted effort to get the ball but it made him look a bit bothered and our fans lapped it up. Same with Heitinga. And on the subject of pointing and not doing their own jobs properly, say hi to captain Neville. Moyes' main man. Plus, in James' case there were loads of games where he tracked back and was making tackles and coming to get the ball from the CBs to try and affect the game. Because he is brave - not a shirker.
Honestly, I find your attitude to him and our team totally baffling mate.
