Rafael Benitez says James Rodriguez was "concerned" about his fitness ahead of the trip to Aston Villa and so was not selected.
The Everton boss named only eight substitutes for the game at Villa Park this evening with injuries ruling key players out of the trip.
Jordan Pickford, Seamus Coleman and Richarlison, joined Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Fabian Delph on the treatment table.
Injury also ruled Jean-Philippe Gbamin out of the fixture.
Benitez called up Ellis Simms to the matchday squad despite the young striker having only returned to training this week.
Rodriguez missed the opening games of the season after isolating because of Covid regulations but after it was agreed not to include him in the squad for the trip to Brighton, he was overlooked for Monday night's game with Burnley despite saying he was "ready".
But Benitez said Rodriguez told him he did not feel ready to play at Villa and the club must now wait and see if he can feature against Queens Park Rangers on Tuesday night.
"For this game, he was a little bit concerned about his muscle," Benitez said.
"He was having a little problem and we decided we have to wait, so he was not available. That's it."
"We will see if he's fit for the next game and then we will decide."
James is gone. Accept this and move on.Ha! You keep telling yourself that mate.
Today's behavior by Rafael has clarified the situation for any impartial observer.
He will play in a midfield 2 with Lord lucanLike I said in the Aston Villa match thread, I'm glad James wasn't playing today because that lot would have just kicked the guy to bits. Looking forward to seeing him making an appearance against QPR.
Think he'd go better in a midfield three alongside Lord Lucan and Glenn MillerHe will play in a midfield 2 with Lord lucan
It looks like this is true, it's self-defeating, but true. Benitez would rather name 8 subs than include him on the bench whilst we pay him millions. It's stupid.James is gone. Accept this and move on.
I support the manager 100% on that.It looks like this is true, it's self-defeating, but true. Benitez would rather name 8 subs than include him on the bench whilst we pay him millions. It's stupid.
Dave, everything is either 100% black or 100% white with you. On this subject Benitez is the white knight and James is the devil, we get it, you don't do nuance.I support the manager 100% on that.
You dont take the piss out of the club and then get treated well.
Out he goes - and good riddance to the spanner.
You should want him gone too: a player who shat on the club.Dave, everything is either 100% black or 100% white with you. On this subject Benitez is the white knight and James is the devil, we get it, you don't do nuance.
Everyone should have the exact same opinion as you on everything, shouldn't they Dave? If he's on the payroll and we're down to bare bones he should be on the bench. Leaving him out makes your boy Benitez look petty, it makes him look weak not strong, like Koeman. You should want him gone too: a player who shat on the club.
I dont see what you get out of defending this abomination.Everyone should have the exact same opinion as you on everything, shouldn't they Dave? If he's on the payroll and we're down to bare bones he should be on the bench. Leaving him out makes your boy Benitez look petty, it makes him look weak not strong, like Koeman.
Yeah, Dave, you said already.I dont see what you get out of defending this abomination.
His time here will be inglorious and short lived.
He's not even a footnote in the club's history.
