2023/24 James Tarkowski

Why wouldn't you show Archer onto his left foot for the second goal? He was only ever going one way. Another head scratcher.
Because the support was inside until Patterson went walkabout.

Having said that, Tarkowski is often out of position and sometimes makes up for it with desperate defending. We’ll all be better off when he’s riding the bench or left the club, but at the moment he’s a clear starter on this roster.

Saliba just did the same thing for Rashfords goal. Just complete nonsense. The on the ball defender doesn’t need support to the outside. Needs support to the inside.

No alternatives other than those proven many times to be much worse than him.

Can only hope the longer he plays with Branthwaite the better understanding they'll get and his level will improve.

He's been woeful in all four games do far though. Misplaced passes galore, massive aimless thump upfield, slow and ponderous in possession, etc. Needs to improve quickly.

Thats the killer. Godfrey and keane waiting in the wings is scary as hell.

Completely forgot he went off yesterday.

Not sure if he was actually concussed or Dyche just didn't want to face a long throw in with just 10 on the pitch.

He's getting plenty of stick but McBurnie just trotting into six yard box and having a free header which but for a brilliant save would've meant yet another defeat maybe is a little detail that people take for granted with Tarks on the pitch?

If there was evidence that he was preventing those situations yes, but the evidence is actually the opposite (wrong side of his man on the Wolves goal). Again, he’s a clear starter on this team but he’s poor.

I meant more from set pieces.

Open play all the defence are vulnerable but I can't recall too many issues from corners this season apart from Pickford v Villa.

Sheffield United had 4 corners yesterday. Know nothing of the first three but last one he goes off and no one bothers picking up McBurnie and most times that eventually goes in.

I think as captain Tarkowski needs to impose himself more on the team. He's our best defender but does have the occasional wobble. Hopefully, the back four are working on things in training as it's a big weak link in the team. But we also need Gueye to stay back as a proper holding midfielder and offer protection for the defence. It was noteable on Saturday in the second half he didn't go forward as much and we looked better for it.

So very very average but the alternatives are so much worse...

Its amazing how wild the swings are on player opinion over just the course of a few matches. If a player plays well for a couple of matches they "have been consistently the most important player for years, and just so reliable", and if they play poorly for a couple of matches they "are one of our worst players, and one of our biggest problems for years".

Not even about how they play, it’s results driven.
If we’d had a striker in for the first two home games, won them and were sitting on 7 points like we should be off those performances nobody would have a problem with conceding one in each game in a league where clean sheets are very rare.

Tarkowski and Branthwaite look like they’ll be a good partnership imo, the problem is lack of depth
