By that logic you would turn down Benteke as well though.

Think if Cleverley came he would be as an Osman replacement, including getting his abuse, we need someone who can cover a few positions but not necessarily be first choice in any one. Some of the games Cleverley has played in for Villa he has been good and some dreadful, but being a new player in a struggling team isn't the easiest task.

I was a bit more hopeful in the summer than I am now that his signing would work out for us. But don't think we are going to able to afford to replace all of Osman, Pienaar, Atsu (and perhaps Mirallas )with top draw replacements, let alone other areas like goalkeeper. So given he will be on a free and he wants to work with Martinez again can understand why we might hire him.
The problem with that logic is that he doesn't replace Osman, Pienaar, Atsu or Mirallas. He's a non creative CM/DCM which is a position we have more than enough cover. Using Cleverly as cover for any of those players is exactly what I fear might happen.

You don't have to be successful to make money....taking the argument of many on here that McGeady, Jagielka, Distin, Howard et al are "sh1te" I'm sure you'd be impressed with the bank balances they've accrued with not a huge amount of success
Seriously dude, I know we might slag them off but they're all players who have played professional football at premier league standard for years and some at world cups. Their success is the stuff we and most hopeful players can only dream off.

Don't think Martinez sees him as a DCM, at least no more than he does Osman. Iirc Cleverley played for Wigan in a very similar way to how Martinez has used Leon, far more creative than defensive and across the front three positions.

Currently he is played by Villa on the right on in a 433 either to the side of the striker or the DCM, so Lambert also sees him in the Pienaar/Osman/Atsu/Mirallas sort of role rather than a Barry like one.

Providing Ledson progresses of course.

He may do a Billy Kenny. (Unlikely I know)

My point is, Cleverly is free, people are carrying on like we're planning to blow our entire budget on him.
Wages have to be taken into consideration and we need to leave openings for younger players to get minutes otherwise they won't progress.

Absolutely. Which is why it annoys me people are content to let Gibson steal a living but are against Cleverly earning roughly the same.

The agitation this possible signing has provoked is just a bit OTT. I mean, it may not even happen :coffee:

I said CM/DCM because I'm aware of where he's been played and I agree Martinez might see him as cover for positions further forward than DCM like where he played at Wigan. That's why I wouldn't want him. He's not good enough to play there. I could take him playing instead of Barry but we have plenty there already.
