Enjoyed that crunching tackle he put in near the centre circle 10 minutes into the second half yesterday lol we should be doing everything to get him & Tarkowski the no. 1 CB partnership heading into the season.

I'd be shocked if Dyche starts him with Tarkowski against Fulham. I guess we'll get a good sense of what he thinks is his best 11 against Sporting.

I think he'll unfortunately go for the tried and failed Keane & Tarkowski

Can’t believe how many chances Keane has had. Branthwaite has so much potential. Coming into the side now would be perfect timing with 2 experienced pros in Young and Tarkowski either side of him to help him out. There starts to be the semblance of a young spine to build on- Pickford (still young for a keeper)- Branthwaite-Garner, Onana, McNeil.

I suspect that he will get a start at some point but only once Keane puts in an abhorrent run of performances costing goals and points. He will get in, do well, make one mistake and will be out again.

People praised Dyche for dropping Keane last year, but it felt forced to me to the point that prior to dropping him, Dyche was having to address selecting Keane in press conferences

….nonsense. Dyche is uncomplicated, he’ll pick who he thinks is best & it’s clear he has serious doubts about Keane. Saying that, he might start Keane as Branthwaite has had little pre-season prep.

….the only worry I have is that forming a partnership will take time. Tarkowski is consistent but it will even take him time to adapt to a partner on his left side. There will be mistakes in the short-term that we have to live with.
I’m willing to live with them if it means we can save money on a CB and actually allows us to develop a prospect for future sell on at a high price. He’s shown enough to suggest that he has the ability to be capable if given some time. We’ve already pissed away all of our youth talent, time to actually show some faith and put whatever little money we have into attacking options

….yep, Branthwaite wants to play and expects to play, I have no doubt about that.

No brainier to just play him. He will make mistakes, lose his man, misplace passes, and probably give away needless free kicks and pens by trying too hard. All things that Keane, Holgate and Godfrey do anyway every time they go on the pitch. If he can cope with scrutiny when he does make mistakes (he’s not a kid now after a year in a high profile team) then just play him whenever fit.

Expect him to grow into a set piece threat too.

Good point this.

We would actually have Pickford, Tarkowski and Young with experience guiding both Patterson and Branthwaite through games.

With so many defenders out of contract in 2 seasons (Holgate, Godfrey, Keane and Branthwaite himself) we need the 2 kids up to speed ASAP.

I suspect this is why weve recently been linked with De Winter (Juventus) and Gonzalez (Valencia) as u21 centre backs -- if we can sell some of the 3.

Branthwaite needs to be given a long term extension and will need to be starting to be encouraged to sign.

We will see alot of complaints in this thread.

Why do you think he has "serious doubts about Keane" ?

Holgate with u21s and Godfrey sat on the bench yesterday while Keane started over Branthwaite...

Yes Branthwaite could have done without being a spectator in that youth tournament. A ruthless person would have seen the opportunity of getting back to preseason at the beginning and establishing himself

I think Dyche is a low risk manager. He will prefer to play Keane where he knows what he will get even if playing Branthwaite might be the better choice. Unfortunately I see JB being number 3 CB. I hope not though
