There was a podcast with Kevin Thelwell a few weeks ago that addressed this pretty well. Basically they decided not to offer Mina a deal or sign Coady as they didnt want to block Branthwaite's progression into the first team.

…Branthwaite didn’t have to get out of 2nd gear for most of last night’s match. Very composed, very classy, him and Quansah looked formiddable in central defence.

With Onana getting the armband before for Belgium and now Branthwaite in this game it bodes well that our best two young players are showing leadership.

Other than Eze giving him some issues he hasnt really had a learning experience from anyone yet.

…I think last night was lots to do with it being at Goodison but what I liked was it didn’t change how he played. Often a player will approach the game differently when first given the armband but Branthwaite seems very mature and (as you say) a natural leader. I’m sure he has the respect of his teammates.
