Cillessen is an interesting one: used to being a number two to a top-class keeper at Barcelona, but also used to being Dutch number one. In other words, good enough to be a serious threat - and thus motivational - to Pickford, and probably sensitised to being a back-up if that's where this battle leaves him.
In that sense, there's really good logic in getting him in. He could well oust Pickford - and would probably be serviceable for us if he does that - and he could also be a very useful number two when called upon.
If Jordan hasn't smelt the coffee this summer, what with upstarts like Dean Henderson publicly coveting the England shirt before he's even got his club's shirt, then I think it's time to get rid. I expect a big season from Pickford because he's got plenty of ability. We're about to find out if he's got the smarts.
