on the bench for QPR, but didn't get on the pitch? how far away is he from being fully match fit? I think he'll make a huge difference to our stability and calmness in possession, can't return to his starting role soon enough.

Roberto said hes close but he doesn't want to rush him.

If he cant quite make it for Southampton id even have alcaraz or barry ahead of distin. Need some calmness in there with how they press

Jagielka played well against QPR and Distin has done ok for us as well. Stones will have to wait a bit but probably get a chance over the Christmas period.

His performance at Old Trafford was very good. He marked Van Persie with a confidence and arrogance that belied his youth. I can't wait to see him back and I think he has more potential than even Barkley.

They may not press as much with Schneiderlin and Wanyama out, but I think Distin has been adequate these last few games, nowhere near as bad as before he was dropped.

Much better on the ball than jags or dustbin. Jags and Sylvain together are an axis of doom, has a big effect on our play.

Agreed- part of the reason teams are closing us down so high up the pitch at the moment is that jags and distan are not comfortable under pressure on the ball. Stones is much better in those situations and it may discourage teams from trying it when he is back in

I have decided that I actually think Stones will be our 'saviour' this Christmas, as he himself may fix many of our problems. Almost a new Jesus.

Firstly, he will replace the paraplegic Distin. This should give Jagielka some confidence back and offer legs and pace to our central defence.

He is confident on the ball, so hopefully our playing out from the back will once again improve. Less of the sometimes woeful Howard distribution.

It should also relieve pressure on Baines and Coleman, letting them advance forward in which they do best.

Recently they appear shackled, which is undoubtedly effecting our offensive options, while also effecting our shape as they are kept in the rear.

Furthermore, it should ease the pressure on Howard who has seemed somewhat shaky as of late. A poor defence exacerbates his frailties.

It may also let our midfield pairing in the middle have some extra time to actually work the ball, rather than worrying about being caught out.

Basically... everyone should light a candle and pray for the return of John Stones. His return may dramatically improve our season!

Or am I being too ambitious here? Ah well, nothing wrong with a bit of Christmas spirit to remove the gloom of Saturday.
