Reeling Manchester United stars were said to be “in shock” last night after a
team-mate was arrested on suspicion of rape.
Defender Jonny Evans, 19, was being held in custody in the city.
He presented himself to police after jetting back into Manchester Airport following
a day-trip to Monaco, thought to be pre-arranged and with a relative.
A police spokesman said last night: “Detectives investigating a report of rape at a
Manchester city centre hotel have arrested a 19-year-old. He was arrested on
suspicion of rape this evening after presenting himself to police. He remains in
custody.”
Police began an investigation after a 26-year-old woman claimed she had been
attacked at the Red Devils’ Christmas party.
She was yesterday taken to a hospital’s sexual assault referral centre, where she
was examined by medics.
She gave a brief statement to cops before being allowed home and will be more
thoroughly interviewed today.
Some United aces headed to the Christmas do at Manchester’s Great John Street
Hotel after a marathon drinking session.
They started Monday lunchtime at the city centre’s 235 casino, where they had a
flutter and lunch.
They moved to The Grapes pub for a sing-song and some paid a brief visit to a
lapdancing bar.
They turned up at the hotel where the champagne was flowing.
Each United player had been allowed to take a set number of guests.
The swanky venue, where rooms cost between £235 and £395, was hired
exclusively for the party by the Premier League soccer giants.
Nearly 100 girls were there, some of whom had travelled hundreds of miles to
attend.
One male guest said: “I spoke to one stunner who had come up from London and
another who had travelled from Newcastle.
“They were gorgeous — it was wall-to-wall babes. Most were aged between 18
and 30 and some were throwing themselves at the players.
“The booze was really flowing. Waitresses were handing out pink champagne to
whoever wanted it. And the players seemed to be knocking back beer, vodka
and whisky.” The guest described the do as a “great party”.
He said star striker Wayne Rooney and defender Rio Ferdinand spent most of it
on the dance floor.
But he added: “Ryan Giggs stole the show when he did an Elvis Presley
impression.”
Police were called to the hotel at 4.15am yesterday.
It is the second year the Christmas bash has been held there.
Last year, the team ran up a £43,000 bar bill and the hotel was damaged by
guests. Old Trafford bosses were furious after an expensive painting was ripped
off a wall and ornaments were destroyed.
Evans, whose full first name is Jonathan, made his first team debut for United in a
Carling Cup defeat against Coventry in September.
He played in their 4-0 Champions League win over Dynamo Kiev last month and in
the 1-1 draw at Roma in the same competition last week.
He has been a regular for Northern Ireland for a year and turned out in their 1-0
away defeat to Latvia in August in the European Championship qualifiers.
United boss Sir Alex Ferguson raved about his potential last year and said: “He’s
got a wonderful temperament.
“He’s quick, he reads the game and he has a good technique on the ball. He’s got
everything.”
He played 18 league games for Sunderland last season while out on loan from
United.
