Saw the highlights of the Arsenal Villa game. If Pickford had done any of the massive errors both keepers made for those goals he’d be getting blasted on here and in the media. Ramsdale and Martinez are two of this forum’s favourites but i wouldn’t swap Pickford for either of them. Ramsdale in particular is a walking disaster who has some of the best PR going.

I don't think anyone on here rates Ramsdale mate

Yes I don’t rate ramsdale think the only one to run Pickford close is Pope. Be interesting to see what kind of season Henderson has.

Tip your cap to the shooter, he feinted Pickford, wrong footed him, used the body in the way to screen, and slotted. Pickford has to do better but that was quality, he didn’t bobble a back pass

I think the issue is though that we have an expectation that Pickford will never make a mistake. It probably was a slight one for the goal against Leeds, a bigger one for the one against Forest. When he makes good saves we see this as the expected norm for any keeper. I don’t think it is though, I look round the PL and even the top keepers are making errors every game that we’d be furious at Pickford for.

You see them being caught on the ball, conceding on the near post, shots going through their bodies, spilling shots and crosses, wrong positions on free kicks etc. They’re just not reported as vehemently as any error Pickford makes.

We need to accept that all goalkeepers make errors, Pickford will make some as well, and in the past I used to be furious with him when he was literally dropping balls into his net most games and laughing about it but since Carlo brought Olsen in Pickford has been in my opinion one of the top keepers in the league for making the least number of terrible errors. To add to that his form at the back end of last season probably kept us up.

We judge him way way too harshly and quite frankly we’d struggle to replace a keeper of his quality. Fortunately Lampard and Southgate seem to know this.

Completely agree.

That he might have done better on this one doesn’t make him a bad keeper. No keeper is perfect.

I had him as my differential MOTM for his command of the box and solid play overall, including some good saves but not just.

I think he gets criticism because when you are watching him in a lot of games he does a lot of things to make you nervy.

I’m constantly wondering aloud why he didn’t come for certain crosses and corners. Then when he comes out of his area he looks awkward and I’m sure has plenty worried he is going to mess up. Then without anyway of knowing it’s true I’m always imagining the back line is not helped by him and don’t trust him 100% (but as you say you’d presume the manager rates him and trusts him so this is likely not the case)

Then if on top of that he makes a perceived error it does leave you with the impression he’s had a bad game.

He is just bloody weird to be honest, I think I’d take a few less of the spectacular shot stoppers if another keeper would claim more crosses, command their area better and not do weird stuff.

But currently it’s not as big a problem as I would have thought it a couple seasons back, he does some really good things and hopefully his few errors are not costing us too many points

Other keepers aren’t doing this though. Ederson is apparently one of the best in the league and he’s terrible at all that stuff, he’ll fly out for no reason and is rubbish at one on ones (unlike Pickford ). Allison has been caught numerous times trying Cruyff turns, Mendy is absolutely all over the shop at the moment, De Gea has done just about every stupid thing a keeper can do, and Lloris thought a World Cup final was a good moment to try a drag back. Ramsdale is horrendous at everything.

These are supposedly the best in the league. This mythical keeper that commands his box, takes crosses, and doesn’t make any mistakes that Evertonians seem to think exists and is really easy to find and pick up doesn’t exist. Fans of most clubs think other goalkeepers are always better than theirs. They just don’t notice other keepers mistakes.
