2024/25 Jordan Pickford

I understand the points you are making but a goalkeeper does not stop goals by standing on the 18 yard line at the edge of the penalty area. He is giving space for the forward to run round him. PIckford should have been in the 6 yard box or at most on the penalty spot.

Did you ever see Southall at the edge of the area
.
I think he had to come out like he did. If he stays close to goal he`s allowing the forward time to get his shot away, if he only come out to the penalty spot he`s not putting pressure on the forward and leaving himself a lot of room to lob the ball over his head. Any way he decided to deal with the situation he had to be decisive, he chose to come out and pressure the forward and he held his nerve and slotted it past him. When the keeper comes out like that you should have a defender seeing him coming out and running back behind the keeper to cover any shot that gets past the keeper but I think our defense was too slow to get back or were too focused on the player with the ball.
Southall was sent off twice for handball outside his box I think, once v QPR and once v Sheffield Wed, both in the early 90`s. after that I don`t think he was mobile enough to get to the edge of the area.

Love him but has that tendency to get sloppy when it's not needed. Put your foot through the ball and send it long not inviting pressure.
He plays better when we are under the cosh and he needs to be switched on more often than not. When he doesn't need to be involved as much he starts trying to get involved and then does silly things like that.

The second goal we`ve gone to sleep a bit, and when you see how low Richy connected with the ball I think he should have dealt with the ball into the box. The first goal was his mistake at first to let Maddison get on the ball, but one defender should have gone out to help him out when Maddison was sent wide. The shot came in there were 4 or 5 blue shirts in the box.

That second goal yesterday was the one weakness that's still there in Pickford's game. Far too many times he allows a forward to have a shot from a cross inside his 6 yard line. He has to come out and deal with that - you can't expect defenders to be dealing with it 4 or 5 yards out.

He's a very good keeper but that's an area you can definitely get the better of him.

Two clangers by him, both goals, but he has saved us all season plus we won 3 points that's all that matters - is a keeper who like being kept busy as his concentration levels dip if our team attacks - no 10 men behind the ball Dyche style?

He made a very good save early on from Son - his ranting & raving at the defenders has to stop as both goals were his fault, no doubts about it - the 3 points were more important for us IMO .....
