Wowzers

this mornings updated article, by paul joyce.

Everton have launched their summer recruitment drive by agreeing what could become a £30 million deal for Jordan Pickford, the Sunderland goalkeeper, and will look to follow that up with the £26 million signing of Davy Klaassen.

Pickford flew to Poland yesterday with England Under-21 for the European Championship and will become Britain’s most expensive goalkeeper on his return.

Everton will pay about £22 million up front with the rest in add-ons, which depending on Pickford’s progress at club level and also with England could result in him being the club’s record signing.

WORLD’S MOST EXPENSIVE GOALKEEPERS
  • Ederson £35m Benfica to Man City, June 2017
  • Gianluigi Buffon £32.6m Parma to Juventus, July 2001
  • Jordan Pickford £30m Sunderland to Everton, 2017 (to be confirmed)
  • Manuel Neuer £19.9m Schalke to Bayern Munich, 2011
  • David De Gea £18.3m Atletico Madrid to Man Utd, June 2011
  • Claudio Bravo £17m Barcelona to Man City, Aug 2016
  • Francesco Toldo £15.9m Fiorentina to Inter Milan, July 2010
Discussions started at the weekend and were concluded swiftly after Everton’s first official bid, but Pickford wants to concentrate solely on the under-21 tournament and will not complete the formalities until England’s campaign ends.

Only last week, as he prepared to meet up with his England Under-21 team-mates, Pickford addressed his future by saying: “I feel like I’m proven in the Premier League, but I’ve spoken to my agent and told him that I just want to concentrate on the Euros and be the best I can. I’ll see where it takes me.”

Sunderland needed to raise at least £20 million because of pressure from banks and Pickford was one of their few saleable assets, given that Jermain Defoe had been allowed to leave on a free transfer in the event of relegation.

Steve Walsh, the Everton director of football, has been pushing the interest in Pickford and, while Joe Hart, of Manchester City, was considered, the 23-year-old has been his first choice since January.

Pickford will replace Joel Robles and Maarten Stekelenburg, who both struggled at various points last season, in the Everton goalkeeping pecking order.

Ronald Koeman, the Everton manager, knows that without Champions League football it is difficult to attract top signings, despite Everton’s new-found wealth through the major shareholder Farhad Moshiri. He has focused instead on recruiting talent that is considered to be up and coming, and Burnley’s England defender, Michael Keane, falls into that category.

Ajax’s Klaassen is the next target, with Koeman having been the driving force behind a deal for the midfielder.

The Dutch side are seeking about £26 million for their home-grown star and are resigned to him leaving this summer. Swansea City’s Gylfi Sigurdsson is also wanted by Koeman, while the Southampton right back Cuco Martina has been lined up to join on a free transfer next month.

In addition, the Malaga striker Sandro Ramírez, 21, held talks with Everton over the weekend as he considers a move to the Premier League.

The former Barcelona forward has a £5.2 million release clause in his contract and Everton are waiting for an answer from the player as to whether he will move to Goodison Park.

Ramírez is a player who Walsh has followed for years as he works closely with Koeman on improving a squad that finished seventh last season and qualified for the Europa League.

Pickford the next Neuer or de Gea then?

Don't know anything about Ramirez, but I get the feeling that he's been targeted because he's relatively cheap. 14 goals from 30 is pretty good though

To have well over double the amount of shots and to still have the same save percentage is very good. Sunderland's 'defence' really was absurdly poor wasn't it?

Given the quality of striker Athletico have had over the last 10 years or so, I'm guessing they wouldn't have just been buying a striker because he's cheap

I LIKE MAN U THEY ARE THE BEST TEAM EVER!!!!!!! I ALSO LIKE EVERTON BUT MAN U ARE BETTER CHELSEA ON THE OTHER HAND HAVE A BETTER COLOUR THAN OUR KIT

I'm going to start by saying I've watched very little of Sunderland last season, for obvious reasons. But I saw Pickford against Everton last season and he played well and I've seen him a few times play for Preston where his distribution was excellent. he is obviously a very good goalkeeper. One area that will be telling is how he manages when he has little to do, top goalkeepers can be relied on regardless of how little they have to do, and I would expect Pickford to be less busy with an improved defence. Other than that I think it will be a terrific signing.

Massive isn't it? Even if half of them were shots that just rolled to him, it's still impressive. Looks like he's had the best pre-season for Everton ever!
