2017/18 Jordan Pickford

Pretty sure they'll have worked out that punching is better than catching when the risk of spilling the ball is factored in.

Very British thing to get hung up on too. Like the obsession with "not getting beaten at the near post". Better to get positioned in the best place to minimise a goal not the best place to minimise a goal in a specific area of the goal.
I'd like to think a full time pro keeper had a high chance of holding a catch rather than fapping the ball back into play. However I also expect a pro player to be able to kick with both feet..... too much to ask of these poor lambs I suppose.

The last few pages of this thread are beyond bizarre. We finally get a keeper we can be proud of and confident in, and we start questioning him because of what Neville, Giggs and Dixon say? What?
Maybe I’ve got a short memory, but care to remind me of ONE goal Jordan was at fault for last year? I mean seriously, singularly at fault for? Like Robles’ “attempt” at the third goal at Anfield, his “performance” at the Emirates...that kind of stuff?

Arnautovic last game of the season? Hadkuk split goal would have been saved if he was taller. I know there are others too.

So you want a lanky keeper to get the higher shots regardless of the fact lanky keepers will struggle more to get the lower shots from same range as Belguims goal.. As someone has already pointed out big nev and Shilton and may I add Gordon Banks were of the same height as Pickford. You can nit pick certain points of any keeper.....they all have weaknesses and mistakes in them as proven in this world cup. Easy targets are keepers. I actually thought Pickford did well to get close to that shot and it's not a given that a lanky keeper would have got it.

I don't think his technique was the best but it was a great shot and not many would have kept it out.

It's ridiculous that he's come under fire for it. It's a meaningless game and the media simply need something to talk about.

We all know that there's improvements to be made. End of the day as good as he was last season he was still part of an incredibly leaky defence and he did make some mistakes.

But he's 24, and these things happen. He'll improve.

Courtois' got some brass 6-inch neck to be saying he would have saved it because he's taller. The big giraffe.

Can't believe that people are saying Pickford's too small as well when not only two of the best keepers of the last decade, Casillas & Valdes, were the same height but our greatest ever keeper is the same height.

And he’s still growing

I'm a fan of Jordan and think he'll evolve into a top keeper in 2/3 years. He's still quite young in keeper terms.

I'm not in the slightest concerned at the goals he's conceded. All 3 were defensive errors in front of him but for some reason the press (and most commentators) have it in for him and seem to be just waiting to pounce.

I am concerned about the two shots he parried back into the danger area as this is a persistent problem with him. Hopefully it's something he irons out in time.

Don't understand the stick he get's on here. He's not the worst keeper we've had in recent years and he's still learning the game.

Apart from the England managers position, there is no bigger poisoned chalice in football than being the England goalkeeper.

Scott Carson and Rob Green were never great to start with, but neither ever really recovered from their England ordeals. David Seaman was a broken man for a time after he let Ronaldinho's free kick sail over his head, look at his tears at the end of that game.

With Pickford, yes he needs to eradicate a bad habit of knocking the ball back into the danger area (and even that is exaggerated, he doesn't do it anywhere near as much as some would have you believe).

You've got to question the pundits and media though, a pointless game were a lot of then were actually rejoicing that we lost and yet they feel the need to pile on the pressure on a young goalkeeper about to play in the biggest game of his life in knockout games were penalties are a real possibility. Clowns.
