Any amount going down is good (y) I just filled up for the princely sum of $4.25 a gallon for 93 octane (much inferior to your gas)

RON 93 refers to the Octane number (or energy content of the fuel).

Most UK cars run on 95 (standard) or RON 97 up to RON 99 (premium).

Also, the QA/QC of the supermarkets, and blending/additive packages are not what the likes of Esso (Exxon), BP, Shell etc put in.

Therefore supermarket fuel is cheap - because it literally is cheap.

I do 50 mpg in my car. 46 mpg on RON 95.

Anyways, I never fill up at supermarkets because knowing the Oil/Fuel industry, I know not to.

i'm on lpg too(y) i'm only paying about 52p a litre though, it's gone up from 36p a litre when i got the car so a bigger perrcentage increase than petrol/diesel. vegetable oil is the way to go apparently.

Vegtable oil is not the way to go. Infact these idiots who've converted their vehicles never seem to put the pitfalls (including high maintance and expensive conversions) needed to use WVO.

Its also messy and technical and breakdowns are significantly higher.

The way to go is hybrid or ultra efficient (high mpg) vehicles.

I'm talking as someone who knows......

The North Sea is a dwindling resource and we are far from self sufficient any more.

The North Sea oil production for the UK peaked in 1998.

Its following "HUBBERT'S PEAK".

i.e. production from the fields is declining.

The UK is not a net exporter of both crude oil and natural gas now. We're now a net importer, and that margin is growing yearly.

In the early 90's we were a net exporter.

Therefore we are no longer self sufficient.... and being at the edge of western Europe we are at the mercy of all sorts of geopolitics.

However, one good thing is the relatively high MPG of UK vehicles. Compared to the bigger/heavier US vehicles (one reason Ford, GM and Chrysler have all been over taken by Toyota and Honda - because they concentrated too much on domestic US market and have paid the price for negligence of the oil industry).

Something that needs to be improved on over the next ten years in addition to finding and using alternative "domestic" supplies.

i.e. GTL (already coming from Qatar). (Gas-to-Liquids via next generation Fisher Tropsch catalysis)
Biofuels (ethical/non palm based), preferably marginal land fast growing (like switch grass).... and cellulosic predominantly in origin
CTL (coupled with clean coal)
BTL (see biofuels)

We also need to see improvements in batteries, fuel-cell designs, CHP and other alternative energy spin offs.

Big area. Global investment doubled in the past year up to $800 billion....... :D
