The North Sea oil production for the UK peaked in 1998.
Its following "HUBBERT'S PEAK".
i.e. production from the fields is declining.
The UK is not a net exporter of both crude oil and natural gas now. We're now a net importer, and that margin is growing yearly.
In the early 90's we were a net exporter.
Therefore we are no longer self sufficient.... and being at the edge of western Europe we are at the mercy of all sorts of geopolitics.
However, one good thing is the relatively high MPG of UK vehicles. Compared to the bigger/heavier US vehicles (one reason Ford, GM and Chrysler have all been over taken by Toyota and Honda - because they concentrated too much on domestic US market and have paid the price for negligence of the oil industry).
Something that needs to be improved on over the next ten years in addition to finding and using alternative "domestic" supplies.
i.e. GTL (already coming from Qatar). (Gas-to-Liquids via next generation Fisher Tropsch catalysis)
Biofuels (ethical/non palm based), preferably marginal land fast growing (like switch grass).... and cellulosic predominantly in origin
CTL (coupled with clean coal)
BTL (see biofuels)
We also need to see improvements in batteries, fuel-cell designs, CHP and other alternative energy spin offs.
Big area. Global investment doubled in the past year up to $800 billion.......
