Just how far behind the top four are we?

This is probably a question that can be better answered at the end of the season but I'd say a pretty long way. The thing with it is even if we finished 4th this season I don't think we could consider ourselves caught up unless we could sustain it the next couple of years. A big problem is the depth. Look at our bench options vs any of the others and it isn't close.

Well, competing with the top 4 is about A. The manager, B. The recruitment. If you can pick out the manager with a good enough eye, there are plenty of future top managers out there that the top 4 have no current interest in, I think thats the easier part. And a top manager can even make average recruitment above average. We have seen how different the SAME players appear under Silva than they did with BFS, or even Koeman.

Then, its down to recruitment. That is a matter of spending money(which we HAVE competed with the top 4 with, and can with the likes of Tottenham), wages(which we cant compete with the top 2-3 with), and good eyes for future talent. Thats why Brands is the most important cog in whether we can challenge for the top 4. If he can regularly find players for 30 million, that play like they are worth 50 million, we can compete. If we could load a team up with Richarlisons, we would compete.

Thats also why Moshiri working the advertising and marketing deals, the stadium deals, and any other revenue is JUST as important as the on-field stuff. Because if we made 400 million a year we could easily spend and compete with the top 4. The more revenue we generate year after year, the sooner we stand on equal terms with them. In this league theres always a good chance the 4-5 teams falter and a good team with a good season can steal a spot. But it will be 4-5 years probably before we could do it REGULARLY rather than a 1 off.

The reality us there is no “top four”.

There is a top one and it is light yesrs ahead of whatever three teams fill the three positions behind it.

As for us........there is no reason why we cannot be among the clutch of clubs fighting for positions 2 thru 4 IMO.

The early signs are positive and I for one am very confident and excited by the coming nine months

Having a very young squad is a massive step in the right direction. We need a top top striker who can get 25 plus.

We have an excellent goalie, defence is a work in progress, gana is our Kante and the front four have started clicking.

It’s all positive.

Pretty much this. If Bernard proves to be the world-class creative midfielder we crave, and Mina the world-class defender, a lot of the jigsaw pieces have fallen into place already. The tough part is getting a Harry Kane/Sergio Aguero.

It might be a bit of a weird top 6 this year...us, Watford, Bournemouth , Leicester and Crystal Palace are wild cards. Sounds deluded? Prima facie , yeah definitely (hi Capt Jags)...but I genuinely feel it’s going to be a topsy turvy top 6 this season

..not rocket science, it’s about buying the right players.

Impressed with what the Reds have done, buying defenders with Rolls Royce engines to fit the system they play. Who knows how far we are from building a competitive team, who knows how far we are from having a relegation team.

I think the squad we have now is capable of 5/6 place. We have improved and a couple of the top six have stood still or gone backwards. We need another two good transfer windows to bring in four more big players to get us European Cup Football.
