2023/24 Kevin Thelwell

It’s not the director of football role that’s the issue, it’s Kevin thelwell

The Thelwell criticism I find slightly odd tbh.

It's well-documented that Thelwell has been working within some severe financial constraints since he arrived here and, frankly, absolute chaos behind the scenes.

There was a Thelwell thread last season and it was utterly lacking in any context and written as if signing players is the only thing he does (when we now know that players sales and acquisitions have not always been his remit, despite assertions to the contrary). Then you get people who simply don't want any sort of director of football so will be opposed to anyone in that role.

Last summer he had quite literally no money, had to sell players and could only bring in players whose clubs agreed to transfer them with quite literally no upfront payment - how many players do you think were on the market whose clubs were prepared to accept the grand total of zero as an up front payment?

He hasn't been allowed to choose the manager and, even back in January 2023 he was getting stick for not bringing anyone in at the end of the window, this is despite the fact that it's subsequently been revealed that we received £40m for Anthony Gordon - all of it up front if the Newcastle documentary is to be believed - we also know that pretty much none of that was available to spend to Thelwell. We know that because none of it was there when the summer window opened.

People don't like that there is a lack of transparency about transfers etc and I understand that, but it's old fashioned thinking and, even if you have a problem with his transfer dealings, ignoring the context about the fact we are living hand-to-mouth and how we are, by a country mile, the worst and most chaotically run club in the country at board level is simply not fair to the guy.

Not many DoFs get wheeled in to give evidence on transfers to persuade an independent committee to not give major point deductions.

That's the type of job he's got.

The fact him or any of the players and staff etc havent been offered new deals is purely down to the fact there's no one to offer them

Not really the place to put this but just read part of an interview with Brands where he very firmly says Benitez was not his choice and the FSW wanted rid of Digne and Richarlison. He felt he had to go.

Certainly seemed to know what was going on here now. Closer that Dele does … lol

The difference with Kevin Thelwell and the two other DOFs is that he’s had to work under the most stringent financial conditions with two hands tied behind his back. If he had the same freedom of money as Walsh or Brands would he have made those signings that we aren’t so convinced on like Maupay or even Beto? I’m not sure. He’s had to piece together a team, sell stars for money like Ricky and considering they’re close to premier league survival with 8 points deducted, you have to give a little bit of credit to Thelwell too. I’m happy with Thelwell remaining in the role, he’s communicated better than others & just like Dyche he’s kept going through all the adversity.

No one plays the PR game like Brands I'll give him that.

There needs to be a special place in hell for whoever designed the Echos (amongst others) mobile site. Absolute torture trying to read anything.
