2024/25 Kevin Thelwell

We come back to the point that I don’t need to show you mangers that hit the bullseye with transfers because, Moyes apart, very few managers deal with the recruitment anymore.

The Ward-Prowse comment is not ridiculous at all. Would be like if someone came in and offered us £40m for McNeil in the current situation - we'd consider that madness for a player with no pace, who contributes little to open play and gets all their goals and assists from set-pieces (and in that comparison, at least McNeil scores his goals from open play). When we signed McNeil, at least it was as a result of needing a wide player who we only needed to put less than £4m down for and who was at least young (22). Ward-Prowse was 29 when he spaffed all that money on him.

Given the fees paid (and Bowen's current age) West Ham would do well to cancel out their losses on all the others Moyes has wasted money on, on those three tbh.

Ward prowse was an established prem player who got near to double figures each season in goals and assists. How much do you think he was going to go for. Id say it was around the going rate at his age of 27.
I dont get the sackable offence comment at all.

Well Evertonians do tend to rate really poor players at other clubs who score against us, so I'll have to assume it's that. He's a £15m player. Even at his peak. He is a poor player overall. And he was nearly 29 when Moyes signed him.

As I said, a poor player overall. Especially for the price.

So moyes and now Everton fans know nothing lol.
Let us know when your next footballing job comes up. I'll be scrutinising your recruitment.

I hope not, I have a bit of a hard time seeing him as value at £43m.
Hopefully it was more a case of us having an upper limit on what was considered his worth and they have simply over paid.
Everton were looking at paying 15 million ish.
£20 million would have done it. Finances were so tight. £20 million would have been a bargain.

The price went up after Antony joined United.

Not sure why we're getting rid of Thelwell. Overall he's done a good job under difficult circumstances.

Wouldn't mind signing another N'Diaye, O'Brien, Beto or Alcaraz.

Not blind to his misfires either but overall he's done well with tiny amounts to spend.

He's certainly made to look better since Dyche left.
Penny for his thoughts on the whole Dyche not playing O'Brien. Seems pretty clear now that was all Thewell's signing. Could make the same case for Beto aswell.
Did we have a manager and DOF going in completely different directions. No wonder we were a mess.

The market is in those countries now. Brighton have embarrassed lots of clubs showing that. But thats a deep infrastructure thing of how the clubs run. Id love that. Buy cheap flog for a massive profit after getting a good few seasons. The perfect model.

I disagree he wasted huge sums of money. Kudos would go for a profit now. Man city offered 50m for paqueta. Thats two deals they could get most of the money back. If they sold bowen tomorrow they could triple their outlay.
The comment about ward prowse being a sackable offence is ridiculous. At the time of signing him he had the highest assist stats in the prem and highest dead ball goals in the prem.
Again. Its easy to concentrate on the negative if thats where you are starting from.
Show me a manager that hits the bullseye with transfers everytime. They dont exist.

If you go through the transfermark lists of Moyes signings at West Ham, I think you'll find most were poor to below average.

Yes he had a handful of good signings in Areola, Kudus, Paqueta, Bowen and the two Czechs...but the rest :o

On permanent deals Thelwell has as close to a 100% success rate for us.

Cant think of another club who have signed consistent quality with a profit.

Me neither. When you factor in how close we were to administration, he saved the club.

His transfers record (especially when factoring in the conditions he had been working in) is about as good as I can think of over recent years, and yet our fans mostly hate him!

This is one stint, theres also the Hugill, Evra and Joao Mario signings he made in the other.

Poor isnt the word. Shambolic?

I can see a few duds there but nothing catastrophic by any means.

Scamacca, was crap Inthis league but was and still is good elsewhere. Sometimes it's like that.

Ward-Prowse, an overpay defo, but they were flush with Rice money at the time and he'd always been a consistent player with excellent dead ball ability.

Cornet
You've named all the decent ones and missed out all the flops - all of which were assembled for a lot of money. And, he has always struggled with strikers.

Fair enough mate, I just didn't read that many howlers. A lot of average, like. Like for example McNeil for us, 15 mil was an okay fee for an okay player.

Flops I can see are Scamacca and Cornet. Though fwiw I think Scamacca is a decent player, just didn't work for him in England.

And now tell me his transfer record has been good since he left us first time. Especially for the money spent!
