2024/25 Kevin Thelwell

Arteta, Cahill, Pienaar, Lescott, Jags, Baines, Coleman, all signed for less than a Doucs.

You can say a lot of things about Moyes, but you can never say that he didnt sign quality players for buttons.

It is of course a different world these days and who knows if Moyes can do it in this era of greed, but I dont think you can even question Moyes on transfers, personally.

He of course had some stinkers, but doesnt everybody.
Ferguson bought his fair share of slurry down the East Lancs. Like you say, everybody does.

I think Moyes has a good enough eye for players but ideally he needs a DoF managing a quality scouting network to help him locate them and then to negotiate good deals on price and wages.

Not sure if that’s Thelwell or not yet. Well probably know as we get closer to the beach end of the season and Moyes starts making comments about the need for players in the summer. If he says we’ve been targeting the wrong sorts, you know he’s not getting on with Kev.

Personally, I'm pretty happy to see that video the club put out. Some of the info is fairly obvious, but it's a relief to hear it from those actually in charge. Also nice to hear they expect to spend this summer. I see it as some pretty optimistic info for once in the last few years. I'm excited for this summer for sure. Just need to maintain safety and we'll be in for a more positive off season.

I think Thelwell will be retained but I have a feeling it could be in a different role/structure. There are consistent stories coming out about TFGs ambition to professionalise our Academy and ‘grow our own’. I wonder if TFG look to hire a heavier hitting DoF/Sporting Director [such as a Paratici] and ask Thelwell to take the lead on the Academy strategy. He mightn’t bite but it could play well to his experience from RB. If they don’t want him/he doesn’t want to stay, given the amount we’ve to do this summer, I hope they act decisively this side of Easter.

I thought he came across quite well in that interview, one thing I would say, he didn't give the impression of a man who thinks he will be let go at the end of his contract. I'm ambivalent to him to be honest, on the one hand, he's done well financially for us and has signed Ndiaye, VillaTim, O'Brien etc, but, he is also responsible for us signing Maupay and failing to bring in any pace whatsoever. Jury is out, let's wait and see what the Friedkins think.

I thought he was excellent in the transfer market and the dithering dave tag was totally unjustified. He scrutinised what he wanted not just in ability but character.
Everton in the transfer market after Moyes left was shocking in comparison.

I am far from a fan but can see why some think he deserves another year.

Although can’t understand why some treat him like we’ve got Monchi.

Ignoring his small misdemeanour of being a red he seems an alright bloke as well.

He said the term “attack the window” in relation to the summer, he has to be active now onwards and maybe signing one or two agreements with foreign free agents, as we are going to need them and all our loans again.

Although if his first move is signing Jack Harrison on a permanent deal I will go nuclear.

Id accept it because look more that TFG will demand results unlike moshiri who was just happy let things go on. Also another thing would not to give him such a long contract would be something like 2 years with an option.

Not entirely sure what to make of that interview. Thought he spoke quite well generally. There was a little too much going round in circles trying to explain the restrictions of recent years.

He said we could "attack" the summer market which is good to hear and right towards the end uses the phrase "conservatively strategic" to describe the approach that would be taken.

It will all come down to where we stand squad wise when the window is shut. We certainly need to be strategic and that's a word also used by TFG but we can't really be conservative. This summer they have to push the margins as much as restrictions allow. We need to begin the process of recovery and catch-up and the correction of years of under-investment, that cannot be conservative.

I guess though he is just allowing some legroom there and not trying to get expectations up too much. Evolution and not revolution he also said.

Fair enough but things must look a lot better by the end of the summer.

They also need to get a stadium naming rights deal over the line and announced. That is going to be a critical component of making us more competitive. We need to hear something about that soon, with the test event next Monday.
IMO, We won’t hear about it until it’s certain we won’t get relegated

Hopefully that "attacking" the market bit means hes been busy working on free agents ahead of time too. A couple players on frees like Walker-Peters would do wonders to free of funds to really transform the squad. I think Thelwell will in the least be kept on to do negotiating as he seems quite good at that. Definitely our most important window in many years, need to hit on a bunch of players.
