Just gone for full fibre broadband as my son informed me Landlines will end in the above period of the title of the thread - shop around for a super fast fibre deal in your area now as prices will zoom up as it gets closer - I will use my mobile etc unlimited calls & text - I have given myself a months grace to let my friends know my telephone number is changing - Landline will be a thing of the past ......

If you leave it till the end, prices will zoom upwards - I took a 2-year deal - I know younger posters will just use a mobile anyway, but oldies on here will be clueless of whats going to happen - also VOIP telephone calls will be with us in the future used off your Broadband Internet - they are about atm but dearer than a mobile contract .....

Not had a Landline for about a decade, Joey. I've just been using Skype or a Mobile ;)

People use their landline?

Agree. But highly generational. I don't know a single one of my friends (between ages 35-50) who have a landline. But my partner's elderly father lives in a retirement community and every single resident there has a landline and use it frequently to schedule dinners at 4:30. They also print out every email to read.

I should also note that using a banana or your curled hand with thumb/pinky sticking out to mimic a telephone is lost on the younger generation, as phones have been largely flat since about 2007. Phones aren't even held to the ear anymore, except for people over 50.

I’d be very surprised if it happens in 2 years mate. They need to have fibre broadband in 95% of the uk before they turn it off

What’s changing and when?

Traditionally, landlines have been delivered through an analogue network, but this is being replaced by digital technology. The new system is called 'Voice over Internet Protocol' (VoIP), but you may also hear the terms 'Digital Voice' (from the landline provider BT) or digital phone.
Once you've moved to the new digital system, your landline will mainly work as it always has, although there'll be some differences – for example, it won't work if there's a power cut unless you have a battery backup.
The changeover has started, and some people have already been moved to the digital system.
For almost all networks, the changeover will have happened by December 2025.
The BT network, which is used by some other telecoms providers, will close by December 2025. Most other companies with their own networks, like Virgin Media, plan to follow the same timescale.
BT has now started to contact a limited number of customers, having paused its changeover programme, and will begin to roll out the programme on a region-by-region basis from summer 2023. However, they aren't currently switching certain groups, including:
  • people aged 70 and over
  • people with additional needs
  • people who only have a landline (and not broadband)
  • people with telecare alarms
  • people with no mobile signal at home.
Other companies have also started rolling out digital systems. In some areas, changes to the network will mean that everyone needs to move to the digital system. You may also be moved to the new system if you decide to move to a new phone and broadband package.
If you haven't been moved over yet, don't worry – your phone company will get in touch with you when they want you to make the change.

Its happening, zero will be different tho, basically they are just using different cables.

My old man used to photocopy £10 notes when he paid cash to the likes of the odd job man. No idea why. Came across loads of these when clearing out after he died.
Sad really

The £23 landline is a rip off though ......
