We always say squad for the squad. The actual team is usually either the team or the side, or at a push the lineup or the XI. You would get away with roster in some sports because of the US influence, but not really in soccerball.
Word. We actually use all the same words you do, but like so many other words, they are interchangeable and because we Americans can never have enough, we had to associate that other word..... "roster" :D

Thanks for sharing this with me though. I'm going to start saying "roster" all over this place to generate some "haha look at that stupid yank" laughs.

Fairly sure they hate Mexico mate. Or is it just Mexico hate America and America is all like "wuttt, chill down dawg".

In order of hate:
1. Italy
2. Mexico
Hehe. I've noticed everyone has their prejudices, you know? It also largely depends what part of the country you live. Floridians get sick of Cubans & Haitians, Californians & Washingtonians get tired of the Asians, Texas, Arizona, New Mex, etc. get tired of the Messicans. (Oh yeah, we call them "Messicans" up here, making fun of their accent when they say it. ) Sorry Chico, easy jab. ;) My best friend is Mexican, and I get a ton of great Mexican jokes almost daily. Here's today's:
DEFENCE DEFENCE DEFENCE when you're defending and such

oh and another one, you put GO in front of any team you happen to be supporting at the time. Examples: GO Everton! or GO USA!

And remember football is now soccer

Rugby is now called football, but they wear big pads take more steroids and throw the ball forwards instead of backwards

Netball is called basketball, but guys play it. oh and they bounce the ball

almost forgot, rounders is baseball. Only americans play it and they use a bigger bat, for some reason it's called a world series! in fact all american sports that are played only by americans are actually world championships :) I think steroids are also a must in this sport too
Haha, right on! I like your analysis. :pint:

You got the steroids wrong though. The sport where players are fatter & use less muscle, baseball, is where the steroid use is rampant. the NFL doesn't have steroids, but they love their HGH!

And did you know that the Limeys coined the term "soccer?" Or at least that is what I was told long ago... We just thought it was such a great idea and ran with it!

See, this is the "DE-FENCE, DE-FENCE!" thing that maddison was talking about. (y)
Don't ask me why on Earth people dress like that and make those signs. I think it's retarded. Oh, and I'm a Miami Dolphins fan. :)
dolphinschick.jpg

what do americans know about soccer?
We know that we suck at it. :P

dont only girls play it over there ?

our rugby lads would flatten your gridiron lads.
You laugh, but our women's soccer team beat yours. :P
Actually isn't our women's team ranked #1 in the world currently? I think they just beat Germany in the final match in October or something.

Gridiron players aren't pansies by any stretch - don't let the pads fool you. These guys are like human physical specimens. Low body fat but heavy weight and huge size. As someone who's played both sports, I can say that Rugby's tough in it's own right - but I wouldn't say a Rugby player is tougher, or a better athlete than an NFL player.

Woo I'm also a Dolphins fan :0)

My analysis comes from the chick in the photos I posted, she's sports mad!

Hmm not sure the nfl players don't do gear mate, pretty sure it's rife but you're right hgh for when there's a chance of being tested ;)

All joking aside, the hits in the nfl are bigger because the players are more rested between plays. Basically the nature of hte game, they also use the helmets as weapons as opposed to them being tools for protection

Mind you those rugby league lads up north, now they are men!

Remember you American Blues this guy is from Brum, he'll be a tad slow, have no sense of humour so go easy on him he is a guest after all is said and done

Woo I'm also a Dolphins fan :0)

That'll be rugby league played far north of Brum(y)

The only reason I say that the NFL isn't as rife with steroids is because they actually have active testing for it. People get caught here and there, but it's mostly diuretics and stuff like that, not actual "steroids."

You're right though. The NFL and Rugby are completely different animals. Both take ridiculous hits. The reason the NFL player's pads get bigger is because the players & hits get bigger. These guys wear all these pads and still develop life problems when they turn 40. I think I read the average life expectancy for a retired NFL player is something like 65. Seriously. You guys know what it is for Rugby players? I'd be interested in the comparisons.

Crap, I realize this is way off course of Landon Donovan. Apologies!

ah, but as i'm sure you know diuretics are taken so that they can excrete the gear.

It's in every sport mind, despite what the media would like to portray

yes way off topic. why's the MLS season so short?? Couldn't they add a few more teams in and make it longer?

to be honest, i am sort of bummed about landon coming over

but ONLY

because now when people find out i support everton, they'll see tim and landon on the squad and be like "oh, he picked the side with the most talented american players on it" i'll have to explain that i liked them BEFORE donovan played for them.

a classic "before they were cool" scenario

but otherwise, [Poor language removed]'s so cash.

Mate, one of the great joys of being an Evertonian is standing in defiance of what the masses think, I always say!

I don't hate Mexico. I lack respect for Mexican supporters who fail to acknowledge that the USA has indeed passed them as the top CONCACAF power as evidenced by results on the pitch. Now this isn't all of them as there are some who understand the dynamics of CONCACAF now but there are still a bunch who are stuck in the 90's and think Mexico are the dominant team. They aren't.

I've changed my opinion on Donovan. I was just frustrated of the inevitability that he'll do well and we'll be bemoaning the club for not signing him.

He's got pace, abundance of work ethic and most importantly - has a point to prove.

He's a useful body, will increase interest in the states and having him for ten weeks will be better than none.

Glad to see you coming around. He may not light the place up but I really want to see him succeed.

That's crossed my mind but I've been supporting Everton since the dour end days of Walter Smith's reign. But yes, I'm sure I'll have to explain it to them as well.

I mean they do play a 30 game regular season, not including the playoffs. They added Seattle for 2009, and now Philadelphia for 2010

As for team Mexico, I hate them and their fans with a passion. After dealing with them in New York for the Gold Cup final, I found an even deeper hatred for them. Throwing beer bottles at us just because we weren't wearing green (Mexico color) is so uncalled for. This happened after every Mexican goal.

Also lost alot of respect for the Mexican team after what the goalie tries to doing to DeMarcus Beasley after Donovan's goal

I feel the same way. I hate Mexico. They are just a bunch of dirty players piled into one team. I especially hate Rafael Marquez. Every time he is losing he hits someone. If it's not elbowing Cobi Jones in the face in 2002 it is kicking Timmy in the hip about a year ago.

The only other person I hate close to as much as Marquez is Giuseppe Rossi. Born and raised in New Jersey, USA moves to italy in his teens now plays for them. Whatever, it's kinda shady no big deal. We play against him in the Confederations Cup and he scores and goes nuts celebrating showing no respect to American fans. (n)
