Reidy's Bottle Of Grecian

The Unobstructed View
my acer keeps on switching off.
i am running on ac power, but the battery is deffo goosed as when using it on battery it lasts about 5 minutes, but on ac it shouldnt do this should it ?
have ran a full system scan which didnt show anything at all, so i have ruled out nasty viruses, norton had updated before the scan.
will the fact that the battery is stuffed affect it when on ac as well ?

need some solutions here tech'eds as doin' my nut in when it just powers off without any warning.

3 things id check is
1. the processor (could be overheating )
2. the power supply.(could have blown)
3. the ram (could be faulty)

remove all the added on hardware , try starting it up

move your ram cards around , try starting it up

check that the processor fan is kicking in , and or/ that theres sufficient cooling gel on the processor.

lastly look at the power supply , a sniff for 'electric burn smell' and a listen for 'crackling' can sometimes be enough .

how the feck do i move cards around, arent these things sealed ? fan is on almost all the time, supose i need to get it checked out, and also it hasnt done it since i posted the thread, i checked the power settings, i reckon power supply may keep disconnecting as plug into laptop is a bit dicky but i get no warning which is unusual tbh.

ahh ok. Still haven't gotten mine yet. Gonna wait until after xmas.

As for the problem, it could very well be your cpu overheating.

You might wanna pull it apart, take the heat sink off of the chip, and give it a good clean with some isopropyl alcohol, then slap some Arctic Silver 5 on the chip, re-apply the heatsink and see how it goes from there.

My mum and dad have an Acer aspire, which i've wanted to throw through the window so many times, I despise the "empowering technology" facility and it took us so long to get to grips with it, your problem could be down to absolutely anything based on the experiences I've had with ours (providing yours is an aspire).

Or just smack it with your palm a couple of times and shout "f'[Poor language removed] sake" dead loud under your breath.

Or sawdust, sprinkle some sawdust on it and youre good to go.

The cpu has a little bit of goop called T.I.M. (thermal interface material) that helps transmit the heat generated by the cpu to the heat sink to be disappated. It probably needs replacing as it is likely dust now after 3.5 years.
