Watched some film called Clue last night, bit of a farce about a murder in a house at a party, ok like, one good thing about it is the DVD has 3 different endings and you dont know which one it is going to show haha

Haha, seen that years ago, it's Cluedo the movie, Tim Curry is the butler, will have to watch it again

Watched the Lego Movie today with my brother and his kids. Not my bag at all. I appreciate that the story had many cute elements to it, but it was a constant sensory barrage for the duration of the film. I was longing for it to chill out a bit and not require every scene to have a multi-cut fight sequence or techno soundtrack.

Have been off sick from work this week so managed to watch the following from my sick bed:

The Motorcycle Diaries, No, South of the Border, La Haine, Blood in the Mobile.

In my opinion all are great films and I recommend all of them. Special mentions to La Haine and Motorcycle Diaries.

Prometheus. Twice I've seen it now; no idea why I liked it after the first showing.

It's rubbish, really.

the bane of the modern blockbuster is to pack 'dramatic' contrivances in there to please the dumb audience:

- the cliched characters everyone can identify with.
- the scientist who wants to touch the cute alien snake.
- the old rich man behind the project is actually on the ship (what was the point of him again?).
- the android with secret ulterior motive.
- the superior alien humanoid acting needlessly antagonistic.
- the nod to Alien to get the internet hype in full swing.
- modern films have to have a central relationship story between two lovers, again to help the audience identify themselves.

If you watch Alien after watching Prometheus, you notice a few key differences in how they set up the drama:

- the pace is much slower, building up genuine mystery and tension.
- the music is sparse.
- the camera-movements are mostly quite still.
- the dialogue of the characters feels natural.
- the characters themselves aren't archetypes, they're just a random bunch of space crew.
- the alien is mechanical, feels more real in film. Unlike CGI which feels like you're watching a computer game.
- the scenes of the alien hiding are more unsettling than any full-on reveal.
- the classic stomach-burster scene is still superior to the OTT self-caesarean scene in Prometheus.
- there's no contrived relationship drama, as the audience don't actually need the distraction.

70's films show little concession to the audience (great art doesn't need to). I don't understand how this lesson has been lost, but I fear the reason is money.

Try Open Grave. I really enjoyed it.

From the IMDB:

A decent watch, thanks for the recommendation. It starts off wank but then gets better, although horror movies aren't really my thing.

My favourite film is 'The Pianist', I might watch it again tonight but would probably prefer to watch something I haven't seen before.

Your welcome, I'm glad you enjoyed it. Certainly not the best movie in the world, but as horror movies go it was different enough to warrant a recommendation.

Now I have not seen the pianist, however if you like dramas and flicks set in the WW2 era, consider watching Conspiracy, an HBO TV movie about the Wannsee Conference. It's one of those movies that is dialogue driven and takes place in one location. You might like it.
