Last Film You Watched

Finally watched Fury this afternoon.

It's dead dead good.

But...not as good as I expected it to be. But that's my fault.

Love a good war film.

The main issues I had was the bit in the middle with the German ladies. Went on a bit too long.

And the end battle. Obviously the point was that it was odds totally against them and yes they did get battered. But surely a 200 strong SS battalion would have had better tactics than running straight at a tank that's shooting at them! Just found it a little unbelievable.

Having said that, I did enjoy the film.

4 Championship Belts out of 5

They ran around the Tank, away from the tank, towards the tank all the while shooting and hitting nothing.

Did you also notice how one shot its day and next shot it's night?

Didn't mind it but I've outlined my problems with film before.

Lawless - second crack at this.. Americana crime tale, deep south, hillbilly moonshine runners, brothers at odds, booze and corruption, chock full of actors I really like, like John Hillcoat, screenplay by Nick Cave.. shooting at an open goal for me, was really expecting to love it the way I love Miller's Crossing.. can't figure out why I don't.

I only thought it was alright too. Didn't really surprise me with Nick Caves book writings that it was a bit scrambled though..

Babadook was a bit cack I thought

I found it above average for the dross recooked in the genre, superbly acted, and I didn't see the hellraiser angle coming, nor them utilising 'Papa Lazerou' in parts. Needed more scares though, more of a tension builder in all fairness.

I liked it, probably the best horror I've seen since The Orphanage (Spanish one). Then again I don't watch many horrors and not into the 'in your face' horrors.

It was an awkward, unsettling watch which was enough for me.

Watched that Tom Hardy film 'Locke' the other day. It was decent. Nicely acted given the narrow scope of the film, but I recall when it was out in the cinema, he was on the radio being interviewed and they were saying 'oooh, it's so tense'. It's not really. Plus there's a couple of rather glaring production errors (notably the opening scene being a shot of my office in London, yet the film has him driving from an unnamed location towards London - bit daft that), but that's just me being picky.

Thinking about it this morning, I think the problem is the story/plot is actually a bit dull; crime family grows in stature, lawman aims to take them down, bit of romance, the end, there's no real intrigue or gamesmanship. It's been done many times before and many times better, and, as well acted as it is, all the central characters lack any real charisma or cool. Missed opportunity I think.

Saw ride along the other night.

You know what i enjoyed it. Not the laugh out loud i hoped it would be but funny in a formulaic type of film is good enough for a friday night .

Woodstock, the directors cut.

Watched it last night, it will never be repeated, oh to have been there.

The late Joe Cocker, RIP, rendition of little help from my friends the standout performance, and Hendrix' Star Spangled Banner, super stuff.

Sid and Nancy

Interesting portrayal of a time and a people, of greed and of conviction, of abuse, denial, and the Youth of the time.

Vicious only lived for 21 years and Oldman gives a solid if slightly distant performance. 3 out of 5.

The Exterminating Angel

A quite fantastic title for a very good film.

A group of guests arrive to the Nobiles' mansion, home of Edmundo and Lucia for dinner and socialising. Strange things are afoot when the house staff, apart from the Steward and a waiter, all decide to leave before the Dinner has begun for a reason they don't understand. Despite the set back, being unable to show the specially arranged animals (a bear and some sheep) to entertain the guests, and the waiter spilling the entre all over the floor (for which he also decides to leave), the evening is fairly pleasant.

That is until, they decide to leave. It's as if some psychological barrier is stopping them from leaving the Music Room. They get up to leave and then always hesitate, and stop, and get distracted by something else. They all strangely seem to accept this, and decide to bunk down for the night. The hosts cannot understand their guests behavior, as this a different time with many social rules, but they go along with it.

What unfolds delves deep into the psyche of these people and the lengths which they will go to survive, or wither. The food and water run out and the Steward also gets stuck in the room.

All in all classic film in many respects, the underlying tension, the deliberate pace by Brunel and the clever instances of imagery and deja vu, and what also looks like the inspiration of a classic Addams Family character.

4 out of 5.

Ye pretty intense that one. Really good. I actually heard Lana Del Rey mention Nancy and Sid in one of her songs. Then looked up and eventually saw the movie.
