2018/19 Leighton Baines

Baines is the answer to Digne if he gets a long term injury - because the evidence is there from the 376 minutes he's played this season.

The lunatics have taken over the asylum.

There is no justification.

Absolutely no way do players reported to be on £90K (Baines) and £60K (Jagielka) take that size pay cut. It would be viewed as insulting after their years of service.

We don't know if Jagielka is getting one and I would hope Baines isn't on the same money but a drop of that size is not likely. He'll take a marginal decrease if any.
...no mate, footy agents are very open to requests from football clubs to slash their client's wages by 75%. Apparently.

Who would you pay to come here that's better than Baines that knows full well coming to us that he's behind one of the best full backs in the league in the pecking order?

That player doesn't exist

I'd give Robinson the chance of coming off the bench all day long over a player with no future at the club and isn't even a defender in any case...and never was.

We will see I guess.
I am very confident a lot of you will be shocked at the wage these two have accepted to stay on for one more year.

I'd give baines one more year and see how Robinson or connolly develop. Sometimes players aren't great at youth level, but seem to find the Premier league easier.

If that's true that Everton are preparing to give those two contract extensions then I feel sorry for all those who think it's great news because it'll wind me up. It means that the club are going nowhere fast and have zero ambition.

Everton re-signing two past-it veterans. Two squad places that could and should be used to build for the future of the club.

Enjoy your "goads".
35 and 37 years of age next season.

What PL club looking to seriously become a top 6 organisation hands contracts out like that?

None.

Ergo: the club have no ambition.

Moshiri talks about not becoming a museum but then allows the squad to be populated by two fossils.

"Ha Ha Ha. It's great though. Let's all laugh at Dave."
No. And you have no idea what the value of the contract will be.
Hopefully they don’t give Jagielka one, but I can’t see them not now.

We’re a mug club.
Going nowhere fast.

Zero ambition.

What a way to kill the buzz of the last few weeks.
I'm certainly not annoyed by this or anything, but I don't think it's quite the no brainer some seem to think. Baines is possibly my favourite ever Everton player, he's been outstanding for us, but his injury record over recent years has been poor, he's not got the legs to get up and down like he used to, and if we're honest in the last game he played he was absolutely horrific. I have no doubt that if we needed to call on him for the odd game here and there next season he wouldn't let us down, but would you fancy him coming into the side for 15-20 games if Digne was out for a couple of months? I'm not sure I would.
Or you bring through good young pros for each of those positions. Like other clubs try and do. Players eager to seize their opportunity.

Is this the Brands/Silva model? Handing contracts to two dinosaurs because "we have more crucial areas populated first"?

BTW, I;d like to know why CD and LB aren't important areas to get right.

Easier to assert than justify that one, I reckon.
35 and 37 years olds when we're supposed to be building for the future. This should be YOUR agenda too, not only mine and some other posters.
Before yesterday's story I had imagined both Baines and Jagielka would go be released and we'd replace them with Holgate and Gibson from next season.

I guess Silva and Brands have weighed it up along with the rest of the squad and think the better thing to do would be to keep Baines for another season. There isn't much more to it than that.
I didn't expect us to go out and pay £20m for another left back. I'd hoped we'd think Robinson was good enough to do it (I haven't seen enough of him to judge myself) but it appears not. I assume he'll be sold in the summer, if he's not good enough to play six games next season then you'd have to think he never will be. Again, it's certainly not terrible news, but I can see why people are a bit concerned about what it says about us as a club. Two years ago we had a 'short window to stop ourselves being a museum', had no 'restrictions on spending', and were a 'really exciting project' and now we're offering contract extensions to players who'll be 35 before the halfway point of the season and who really haven't looked too hot for 18 months now. It's not a surprise, but it's sobering.

To address Baines (as thats currently the contract pushed by the media) id like to pose a question...

What if we are pushing for a left back prospect i.e Robinson / Gibson to be second choice but feel they will need to be gradually integrated in/out of the matchday squad?

If we start off with Baines at season start but phase a youth prospect in over the season then it would make a lot of sense in comparison to signing a player who may block their integtation...
