He was undoubtedly one of the best LBs in the world mate.
Unfortunately we were financially hamstrung through his most productive Moyes years.
You need to let your view of his perceived involvement in the totally justified removal of El Fraudo , from obscuring the truth
Best left backs in the world...who couldn't ever defend.

He was a winger by trade who 'adapted' his game to fulfil (badly) defensive duties.

It's funny isn't it that one of 'the best left backs in the world', when he retired, attracted just a handful of media articles about his career.

I’m not so sure he was. Great player for us, but playing for a club who’s happy with a draw away at palace, compared to a Bayern, real for example who expect a win and titles every year, is different pressure. He didn’t exactly shine for England when he got his chance, at one point even saying he didn’t want to be considered because of homesickness? I’m not so sure he was mentally strong enough to compete at an elite level

Dear David,

I can assure you we did everything we could to extend Leighton’s playing career with us – although we completely respect his decision and wish him well for his future. As our Chairman said in his tribute to one of the best left-backs ever to have graced Goodison and the Premier League, Leighton knows the love and respect that Evertonians feel towards him…and that’s what really matters to him. Marcel and I have been working behind-the-scenes with Leighton over the last few weeks and are excited about how we might be able to continue a relationship with him in future. We’re currently working through some of the final details, which we believe will be great for Leighton and for our football club. While we’re not in a position to confirm this yet, I assure you that you will be the first to know – as I know how much Leighton means to you and how interested you’ll be in any role we confirm with him.

He didn't have the nerve to go to an nternational tournament because he'd feel 'home sick'.

FFS.

most LB/RB's get judged on attacking play these days, You have to do an adequate job defending these days, Baines always was an okay defender but attacking he was one of the best for sure. Him and Pienaar was disgustingly lethal.

The real best full backs in the world can do both roles.

Meunier, Alaba, Pavard. Those types are class defenders as well as going forward.

That a direct quote? Don’t remember that myself

"At the end of the conversation I was asked if I was missing the family while we were away and I said I was. I'm not embarrassed to admit that being away from the family is difficult at times but I'm not the only player who feels that."

Capello reacted to that and dropped him before he could sit it out.

Regardless, it doesn’t mean we have to give him a job. He just refused a contract, now he’s being offered another one in another capacity? Crazy.
Only football. This is a decision by one person only. And it isn’t brands, Moshiri or Ancelotti. Until this chairman (can you believe he is still chairman????) is gone, we will never progress. I bet Coleman can’t wait to retire now. It must feel like a real kick in the teeth if so many players who’ve spent longer than 4 years at the football club, don’t get offered some sort of job.....
