Baines situation is as it is with Schneiderlin, Bolasie, maybe Walcott, Jags and WIlliams too - we need high quality alternatives in every position just to put pressure on the older established internationals, who might be complacent now> i think Baines and Jags are 'great servants' in the sense that they've stuck with us, worked hard and maybe didn't have any serious offers to go anywhere else, so settled down in a club where they are loved, but now we do definitely need upgrades. A realisetic challenge by a youth player or a new player, might give Baines motivation to play his best, or he might work in tandem with a younger player and then move on next year. Baines has been decent, but not dominant like he used to be. THere was a time we had very few creative players, and COleman and Baines were our best chances of assists.
I like the way Brands and Silva seem to be talking about 2 realistic players per position, and that's a great achievement if we get it. Sometimes there's no faith in the young or reserve players so it's not real competition for places. If we get someone on a 2-3 year deal and they either replace Baines or move on if they don't get in, it's fine, and realistic
