In 1996 Les was responsible for Everton becoming the first Premier League club to introduce a heart-screening programme for all playing staff, after the tragic passing of academy player John Marshall.
All top flight football clubs followed Everton's lead.
Professor Bill McKenna, one of the UK's leading cardiologists, said: "Les Helm was one of the initiators of the scheme at Everton. He took the lead in coming to us and now others are following. They have been instrumental in influencing the FA to support the project."
Lives were saved as a result of the initiative.
Wow what a legacy. RIPWas unaware of Les until now (and John Marshall), but doing some reading on him and not only was he a great physio for us, but he probably contributed to the prevention of the deaths of numerous young players:
