Understandable Spurs not buying now, they have a decent sized squad and cover in the shape of parker/ livermore/ sigurdson etc, why sign a player now on decent wages and pay him for 6 months when oppurtunities will be limited. Get him in 6 months, pay no fee to the club and start wages from that point.
It's why we got Beckford on a pre-contract agreement. At the time we didn't need him, and makes good sense to secure him for the future.
I would imagine there is a penalty if either side drop out of an agreement such as he has signed.

There can't be a penalty for Shalke as the deal has nothing to do with them.
The agreement with spurs is that he will sign with them when his current contract expires... that's why it's a pre-contract and not a contract.
Shalke still have the right to sell the player and that will make any pre-contract defunct.

....I'm afraid the sentiment of who you or your Dad supports will come low down on the list of requirements. The draw of playing for a club with relatively sound investment and living in the capital will be more significant given a choice. Location, location...
