Maarten Stekelenburg

2 occasions last night I said to myself 'that's in'. First was Kone's free header from a corner. Stekelenburg just caught it with ease. Second was Khazri's free kick in the second half, he got it over the wall and on target but again Stekelenburg just caught it. I've got so used to any shot on target just automatically going in. Howard's positioning on free kicks was shocking and he seemed to fall over under any pressure on crosses. Stekelenburg is just making the basics of goal keeping look easy as they should be.

Tbf that free kick was pathetic. Lofted over the wall at snails pace and safely into the goalkeeper's arms.

The Kone header I was slightly concerned about, mind, but wasn't in the corner, was straight at the keeper.

At no stage did I genuinely feel like one of their efforts would fly in.

I've got too used to Howard, as soon as a free kick beats the wall I tend to think it's in. Check out Gerrard's in the Jagielka derby, it's practically in the middle of the goal but still went in.

I think Defoe would have scored if he'd got it on target, not that there would have been anything Stek could do if he had.

He hasn't been called upon more than Howard or Robles over the last couple of seasons but that just shows that our defence is more solid. But when called upon he has produced some very good saves. I feel he has already produced a calming effect on our defence with his ability to claim crosses within his zone rather than leaving it to our not so big defence as Howard and to some extent Robles did. A keeper that doesn't flap at crosses is worth just as much as a good shot stopper. Confidence is coming back to the defence so get through them and now you have the extra difficulty in beating a competent keeper. We are looking mean at the moment and restricting teams to very very few chances/efforts albeit Spurs are the only top team we have played so far.
